A Podemos activist leaves her home out of fear after taking in an immigrant squatter
The police told her that without an eviction order, they couldn't do anything

The woman had been living since January with a man she had taken in for humanitarian reasons. The tenant, a 48-year-old immigrant of Maghrebi origin, stopped paying rent and began to display intimidating and degrading behavior. The situation has led to a public complaint and a citizens' campaign that has gathered more than 18,000 signatures.
According to El Español, Estíbaliz met the man through a homeless aid association where she volunteers. In December 2023, she decided to rent him a room in her apartment for €350 per month. The agreement seemed solid and was formalized with a contract. However, after a few months, the tenant's behavior changed drastically.
The woman reported that the man insulted her with words like "whore" or "dirty bitch" and repeatedly made sexual innuendos. He also began to watch pornography in front of her and created an unbearable atmosphere in the home. According to her account, the tenant left lights on, slammed doors at night, and kept the television at a high volume in the early morning hours.
Kortazar, who is 48 years old, explains that her attempts to ask him to leave were ignored. After the rental contract ended in January 2025, the man refused to leave and became an "inquiokupa." He also brought objects and trash from the street, refused to clean, and even changed the locks on the home twice. In one attempt to convince him to leave, an acquaintance of Estíbaliz tried to mediate. They argued in Arabic, and the tenant ended up assaulting him by biting his face.
Estíbaliz went to the police on January 1. However, the officers told her they couldn't act without an eviction order. Since then, the man has continued occupying her home, not paying rent and generating utility expenses that amount to more than €200 ($215) per month. Meanwhile, she has stayed away from her home since June 6, temporarily staying at a relative's house and undergoing psychological treatment for the stress she has suffered.

Kortazar was a candidate for Elkarrekin in the municipal elections in May 2023, a coalition that later joined the Sumar platform for the general elections. The experience she has gone through has led this former political representative to radically change her perspective on renting and taking in vulnerable people. According to her statements collected by El Español, she says she won't rent out a room or offer similar help again.

I say don't rent out rooms if you cannot handle being a landlord to start with. Regardless where the people came from.
Sounds like a lack of forethought with selecting tenants and how she would deal with them, and not vetting tenants before signing agreements to do so, on her part.
She learned a valuable lesson: A female with a house and renting out rooms, needs to put in some work of who they rent to before letting them in. Or you might end up with a misogynist pervert roommate.

Was she mudsharking that man or any other immigrant she 'took pity' upon in the past?
Is she considered white enough for the term?
Is a typical Magrebi man black enough for the term?

Does any of that matter?
A woman took a homeless stranger in, rolled the dice and got a creep. And was unequipped to deal with it lacking wisdom of foresight to consider that could happen.
Thought it was pretty common sense:
Middle aged women should not invite homeless they don't know to live in their house.

If I did, I didn't mean it that way. In none of my thought process of it, did I consider her trading sex for shelter.
Not sure how you read what I wrote, but I in no way meant it that way. I meant it as: You invited a strange homeless man into your house, HE might be a misogynist pervert, you have no idea.
But it would matter a LOT if she did. But it doesn't seem any indication for that article that was the reason.

Happens quite often in my town. Not like daily, but it's enough to see local news and go "Squatters snagged another vacant/for rent/empty for a month or two house".

The word misogynist gives you less credence. It's such a overused and dumb word. You're a misogynist for looking at a females bum when she's wearing basically nothing in public. It just doens't have any meaning and is just a word to dominate public discourse in recent times. Though the word is irrelevant the mechanics within pretty much applies to many middle easterns and africans. Just how it is and she's dumb as fuck, but it's a valuable lesson for her to learn and her peers.

Dumb as fuck for sure, but it's good for all that these things happen. At some point we can hope the governments in the UK and EU have no choice but to start cracking down on stuff like this, but right now the elephant in the room is quite invisible. Probably not good for their careers to address them.

If its anything like the US, the laws that allow them to do this, are the ones made to protect legitimate renters with asshole/shady/impatient landlords. or homeowners close to paying off a mortgage and banks thirsty to default them so they can get the house and sell it full value to someone else to start a new mortgage.
It's complicated, convoluted, and exploitable (at least here) because of all the caveats, inclusions, and protections it has to extend to cover all legitimate cases that illegitimate people can hide under that umbrella too.
For example you could say "if they don't own it, or have a lease they have to leave tomorrow".
But then the landlords/mortgage providers exploit that and add lease clauses that they can immediately cancel leases on failure to (some absurd rule), or lenders retro foreclose on you, counting ANY month you was late in 20 years as cumulative.
So then you, "don't own it, or have a lease" and could be kicked out tomorrow. Then you could think of a "Well then add this stipulation to fix that" and down the rabbit hole of how all the caveats, inclusions, and protections got added. And how it got so complicated, convoluted, and exploitable.
And 100% once its in front of a judge, common sense and reasonable judgement shows it's being exploited. But that can take months to get to that point, and that's the circular issue and part of how it gets exploited.
