|
 |
Quote: | AI Overview
The name for "turkey" (the bird) varies significantly across languages, often reflecting the perceived origin of the bird or its perceived characteristics. Here's a breakdown:
European Languages:
Greek:“galopoula” or “French chicken.”
French: dinde (sometimes also dindon), meaning "chicken from India".
German: Truthahn, meaning "trut hen".
Italian: tacchino, which is said to imitate the sound the bird makes.
Spanish: pavo, which comes from the Latin for "peafowl".
Portuguese: Peru
Scandinavian Languages: kalkun or kalkon, derived from "hen of Calicut".
Dutch: kalkoen, same as above.
Other Languages:
Arabic: dīk rūmī (ديك رومي), meaning "Roman rooster".
Chinese: Huoyiji (火鸡), meaning "fire chicken".
Japanese: Shichimencho (七面鳥), meaning "seven-faced bird".
Korean: Chilmyeonjo (칠면조), meaning "seven-faced bird".
Russian: indeyka (индейка), comes from Indian chicken.
Turkish: hindi.
Hindi: "tarki" (तर्की), which is a direct translation of "turkey"
Hebrew: odu (India)
Interesting Notes:
Many European languages associate the turkey with India or Turkey, reflecting the bird's perceived origin.
The name "turkey" in English is a historical error, as the bird is native to North America.
Some names reflect descriptive features, like the "seven-faced bird" in Japanese and Korean.

On the fourth of July, if you live in the USA, this bird may end on your plate.

@iconized That's thanksgiving Day.
No one eats turkey on 4th of July. That's burgers, hotdogs, whatever you can grill outside during summer really.
Why the president pardons a turkey in November. That's when Thanksgiving is.
