Opeth’s Next Album Will Feature Cameos From Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson
Opeth have recruited some prog rock royalty for their next studio album. The Swedish death metal turned prog rock outfit enlisted Jethro Tull‘s vocalist, flautist, etc. Ian Anderson to perform on several tracks from their upcoming fourteenth studio album. Anderson revealed the news recently to ‘Mystery Tour Radio Show‘, offering:
“Well, from time to time I play on other people’s records, if they’re interesting to me. I just did — last week I played on three or four tracks from a prog metal band called [Opeth]. [They’re] Swedish.”
This collaboration follows a past failed attempt by Opeth vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt to get Anderson to appear on the band’s 2011 release, “Heritage“.
The new album will make a LOT of fans really happy. When I first heard it I was like "WTF?? Oh yeeeah!!". I like "newpeth" but obviously LOVE "oldpeth". §1 sounds like a perfect mix of Watershed and In Cauda Venenum. Evil, dirty and heavy.
Yeah, I read that as well. Also, Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull is guesting on 3-4 tracks on the album. That makes me think that the album won't be all heavy-growl songs but a mix between blackwater park<->watershed and in cauda venenum style material.
It's ironic that Ian Anderson decided to guest on this album. Mikael had asked him to guest on previous albums (the prog-rock albums) but Ian declined. Now he's guesting on Opeth's heaviest album in 16 years.
Mikael/Opeth is heavily inspired by the music of Goblin, the Italian prog-rock band that have made many soundtracks to Italian thriller/horror movies as well as some American movies (Zombi/Dawn of the Dead, Martin etc.).
