I think this may be the worst year on PC yet..
- Starfield, awful, refunded.
- DragonsDick2, buggy mess console port, refunded.
- Graven, seemed unfinished, pass.
- Phantom Fury, seemed unfinished, pass.
- Last Epoch, out of EA crashes a lot and meh game.
- Alone in the Dark, stuttering and odd game 6.5/10.
- Helldivers, I'm not interested in online co-op.
- No Rest for the wicked, could be good but its EA and seems very early, pass.
- The Thaumaturge, was just too console for me, refunded.
## Upcoming games to look at:
- Tempest Rising (3dRealms )
- Stalker 2 (2024?)
- Selaco
- Core Decay (team layed off, on hold/cancelled 3d realms).
- Elden ring DLC, don't know if I want to play again.
- Rift Breaker DLC, don't know if I want to play again.
- Frostpunk 2
- POE 2 Beta (maybe Q4 this year).
I don't think i've played anything good released this year. Just old stuff, old X-Com, TibSun mods, PoE, Songs of Syx, Ixion. Have there been any sleeper Indy games I've missed?

I do JRPG sometimes, Eiyudeen Chronicles looks good but not in the mood for Snes era looking JRPG. The other franchises don't do much for me, Ghost could be good.
Other stuff, but I don't think this year:
- Judas (ken levine)
- Clockwork Revolution - (Inexile, which have a middle of the road track record for me).
- Doubt anything from Capcom, new RE etc.
- Silent Hill 2 remake, don't think this year.
- Avowed? not sure i'll pick this up, needs to be more than fantasy outter worlds.

I actually read the sentiment we have now, that it was better before, in a 99 issue of some local magazine. It's so funny reading that in modern times, the author was spending the year in which Age 2, Homeworld, System Shock 2, Alpha Centaury, Planescape, Quake 3, UT, Heroes 3 and another 100 landmark games and he was acting nostalgic towards Warcraft 1 from 94 and those times
2002 and every year until 2009/10 or so was filled with landmark, formative games on PC, that molded the present we have now. 2002 with Warcraft 3, Allied Assaullt, Battlefield - those dumbasses were swiming in iconic games and were pretending it was bad and pc is dying. It wasn't until E3 2007 that things were getting palpably bad. Before that, the expo was pretty much split in half between good pc vs console announcements. There were years, like E3 2002 when Doom 3 moped the floor with everything else and 2003 when HL2 did the same. You'd have to have an agenda or be very stupid to claim pc was dying in those years like in the article above.
Though AmpegV4 is not refering to nonsense like that, PC is not dying, its the best selling gaming platform in the world, outside mobile. Almost any game sells most of its load on steam now. It was the nr 1 platform in Europe for 2023 according to GSD sale data. A far cry from when crytek, ubisoft and epic were shitting on us at the end of 2000s. He's just saying it's a year with few or uninteresting releases. Which i agree with. The benchmark for me to consider gaming years good or great are releases like the ones i wrote from 99. Big in number and big in impact. This year is filled with smalltime stuff imo so far and dissapointing releases. I do think its one of the worst years as well, so far

@qqq
I feel the same, so many articles of "PC gaming dead?" since I can remember reading PC gaming articles.
I suspect its a mix of higher expectations, and past us having naivety and excitement of new exposure to features/mechanics for the genres we played long ago.
Higher expectation/naivety are one in the same I suppose. 20 years ago (or however long ago your dive into gaming as a hobby was) any new game, in a genre you didnt have experince in was 'fresh and new'. I remember games I LOVED, that looking back was 'meh' at best. But only because I had no extensive library of 100's of similar games to compare it to.
So now 30 years later, I have 30 years of games to compare to, and VERY rare one of them gets over that hump of collected comparators I have built up to make a 'good' game.
I use to LOVE black and white. Solid game, for its time and my lack of other god/builder games to compare it to back then.
If it came out now, it would be the most bare bones, simplistic, pretty 'meh..is this a solo dev project?' feeling game. Now a god builder game reeeeally needs to have something that would be mind blowing to me back then, to even be considered worth getting now.
Sim city 2000 blew my mind as a city builder (hell I spent 100's of hours on NES Sim city..the blocky square based one). Now after over a dozen city builders, City Skylines 2 which would have blew my brain out of my head back then..is a "Eh..I might get it, if on sale".
Because my 30 years of complied expectations of "MOAR!" in gameplay grows faster than the genres and tech does.
If most games made this year, came out back then with graphics for the times. But the gameplay they have now. We would be calling it GOTY and remembering it fondly 30 years later (as in now) as "Why aren't games like this anymore??"

"PC gaming is dead" is pretty much the first click bait garbage that i can remember, i don't know why anyone would even care about it, it's not like anyone ever believed it, and obviously not even whoever wrote those garbage clickbaits.

As a PC exclusive gamer, I did feel it was true back in the Xbox360's and PS3's heyday. PC games were mostly console games that ran worse during that era.

The thread is about 2024 PC game releases, not the death of PC gaming as an entertainment medium. Of the games others listed, I've got songs of conquest (and played through it last year) and it's pretty good as a HOMM type title.
Ghost of Tsushima wasn't on my list so I'll have a look at that as a big budget game. Homeworld 3 is a potential play, apparently they delayed the game and have fixed/addressed the broken control scheme and camera so we will see. The rest I'm not that interested in, I also rarely ever play flat clones of innovative games (when the original tends to have more polished gameplay, content and a mod community).

Ah ok sorry we got side tracked. Or I did (surprised huh?)
I see it as: Not every year can be a winner. My genre range is pretty narrow. I can think of years nothing I wanted came out and what did sucked.
I dont consider that a bad year for gaming, I see it as a 'meh' year for my type of gaming. As some solid games came out, that will/would (or did) become instant classics, just they wasnt in my wheelhouse of content.
So I think the correct phrase would be: I think this may be the worst year for me on PC yet.
As what came out and what will for this year for me and my range of genres, is better than last year to me. Yet isnt for you.

- Warhammer Spacemarine II (september)
- D4 expansion
- WoW expansion (yeah I know it's niche, but still playing)
- AC: Japan (I hate Ubiturd but I'm looking forward to the setting)
...and perhaps they won't fuck up the Indiana Jones game?

whats fasinating to read in those articles is how up until like early 10s .... most of these jurnous saw Blizzard as the sole saviour of whole PC gaming , while barely anyone saw the slow bloom of Steam coming , some articles even dismissed it like here from 2009
https://oakstout.blogspot.com/2009/01/life-support.html
Quote: | Yes, that's right, the company gamers love to hate, Blizzard, is going to be the computer gaming industries Savior, at least for the next 2 years. But Oakstout, what about Valve and their Steam service, won't that help? Not really, especially since they release just about all their computer games on to console systems as do many other computer software companies. They have no loyalty to the computer gamer. They want to make money, and right now, console gaming is a huge industry. Blizzard isn't porting any of their games to consoles, yet. To my knowledge they are dedicated to games for computers. They want to supply addictive software to the computer bound individual, their loyal consumer. lol |
super fascinating to read from pointt we are now
