I was wondering what everyone here thinks. What is the most stupid filter / post processing / effect ever? I would have to say definitely film grain! I hate it with a passion and it doesn't depend on the game at all. I've hated it even in Silent Hill. I always turn it off immediately. Why the hell make a crisp looking game look dirty and grainy? So stupid. Closely followed by motion blur if they apply it to the camera and then chromatic aberration. I actually like Depth of field for some reason. I think it looks kinda cool.

Motion blur by a long shot. The console peasant's greatest sin brought forth upon the PC Master Race. Mad

It's used to give games/scenes that "old timey" footage effect. Old camera lenses used to darken at the edges like that I believe.

Screenspace reflections. This is the most offending to me in the last 10 years.

The ray/path tracing era was suppose to save us from that shit, but alas, we suffer more.

Both film grain and CA are the first ones I always disable, followed closely by motion blur Very Happy But CA hurts/strains my eyes after just a little while, so that takes the lead.

Depth of field can be a nice visual addition, for cut scenes and such. I usually leave that on.

Most of them. I always disable Film grain, Motion blur, Chromatic aberration, Depth of field. I like my screen as clear as possible. I don't really know what Subsurface scattering is and I don't mind occasional Lens flare if it fits the scene.

I think the price kind of automatically goes to motion blur. it's something we've been fighting to get rid of since the first LCD's came out, and now it's artificially introduced instead because someone had the idea that maybe it's nice to have after all? Was there really a time where people asked for this effect? i doubt it but i guess you also shouldn't underestimate people's stupidity.

I'd Pick Motion Blur, if DOF wasnt on the list.
At least motion blur, blurs things moving. DoF blurs thing I could look at and focus on, but game refuses to and goes "no no, your eye focus is on this spot on the screen".

Maybe its how I play games, but any that had motion blur drive me mad, as I look around the screen and everything but what the gam thinks I should be looking at wont come into focus. that "You should be focusing here, so the DoF looks right"..well maybe I'm not looking there, because this cutscene is annoying and I'm checking out the room they are in, but cant since you are controlling my eyes focal distance on the rambling asshat on the screen"

Chromatic aberration probably takes the cake for me, even though it's a close fight with KCblur, film groin and the bloody vignette effect that the couchpeople find visceral. There was a time when lens dirt was really huge too for some reason Very Happy Laughing

Thankfully most of these are either toggleable or can be turned off with some ol' brute-forcing/modding, life finds a way. There are some (rare) exceptions such as advanced types of motion blur in driving games, but when possible I just disable all the effects that simulate the camera and have no place in a Personal Console game.

You guys also forgot one of the major post processing that used to plague games until HDR become a thing: color grading / aka “feels gritty” / aka pissvision Laughing

Since I'm mostly playing RTS, management sims and such, graphics tend to be on the back seat.

But I do love a good FPS, and motion blur makes it feel like everytime I'm turning my head, I go from healthy individual to heavily drugged/drunk person for a second.

I'd like to meet the guy who thought that was a good idea.

Funny how motion blur and chromatic aberration are racing for the win. Almost the exact same number of votes. Laughing
I really wonder why developers think using this crap makes their games better when in reality they only look worse with it. Is it some kind of brain disease like the woke disease?

Damn didnt even make it past page one of a gaming topic before it creeped in. I had high hopes for this one since it was so far removed from it, seemed near impossible to be brought up.
