I couldn't find a thread, anyone into this? If I had the space I'd consider it (although there is also a pinball pub/arcade near where I live at extortion prices). Anyone had one, what's the deal?
A) No matter how good a table is, do you get bored of it and ultimately it gather dust?
B) People say they break frequently, how much maintenance do they need? Looks pretty complicated and they have instant-death transformers/caps as well.
C) Virtual Pinball machine good or bad? who is making the virtual table software then as they must conform to specific form factor / TV - then ultimately how good is the FPS and Refresh.. if the ball isn't smooth it's shit.
-> makes me think that 3DS type 3d effect could be used here to make more 3d virtual tables.
My father had a streak in his mid 30's where he started collecting stuff like pinballs, and coca cola vintage stuff, and all that.
I think it depends on the person and if they are into it for the nostalgia of a specific machine or machines, or just REALLY fetishing pinball era. If it's someone's just got a passive interest in old school arcade games, maybe not.
As both me and him got bored of a machine within a month. Once we learned all the quirks of its board like where to aim to get high points by chain reactions or 'it gets stuck bouncing around shit for a while there' and all that. It lost its luster. So he got caught in a loop of trading them with others in the hobby for other ones, at an expense. Would have been cheaper to just go to an arcade once a week and play them if overtime cost was calculated.
As far as breaking, my/his experience was bullet proof. They either worked when we got it, or didn't and never broke once we got it fixed. I remember one in the laundromat near our house as a kid that had to be 20 years old, and I guarantee that ghetto ass laundromat never paid to fix it once. Because if it had ever broke it would have just sat there broke for 10 more years.
PS. Technology Connections isn't derpy I love that channel. Cheesy and nerdy yea, but don't think derpy is the right word.

They look nice and it's a kid dream to have one for sure. The original Star Wars pinball is great. But they are also very noisy, and it kinda cheapens the living room, doesn' it?
So it would have to go to the garage or basement and then it'd be quickly forgotten, I'm afraid.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
I agree, you'd need a fascination/addiction/compulsion for pinballs themselves to enjoy it beyond a few months. Before it becomes a table you put crap like boxes, and "Shit I will move later" onto.
Why the trading market was so easy for my dad to get them: People bought them "I LOVED these as a kid" got the 'old kids memory' smell out of it, then realized its not the same feeling as when they was a kid (as being a young carefree kid IS part of the nostalgia wrapped in it), and selling them off/trading them for a new "OH new nostalgia kick for two more weeks".
So depends on why you want it, if I'd say it's worth it.

I had kind of answered my own question during the post but followed through anyway, the pub/arcade with 25-30 machines is the correct location for pinball activities with a real machine. Although I think if you wanted one for a man-cave the virtual one makes a lot of sense where you can add and patch existing machines but have the form factor.
A Pinball Dreams/Fantasies port to virtual table would be pretty sweet for those old enough to remember those.
