Previously he said it's his dream to direct Dune, and now that Legendary bought the rights, it seems they approached him.
Villeneuve is one of the most wanted cerebral directors right now. I hope he delivers with Blade Runner 2049 (which so far looks great).

Talk about striking while the iron is hot xD
I'm very much okay with it , the talent is definitely there, although it remains to be seen whether BR will deliver or not (a vital step for him..and for men kind).

I have just received Draft #4 of the DUNE screenplay from Legendary Pictures. This is for the first movie, covering approximately half of the novel DUNE. I'm very excited and pleased about this, and I'm beginning to burn the midnight oil.

bleh,to make it good you´d have to do it LotR style with 3 movies to cover the Paul Atreides era. its "filming on thin ice" so to speak, that homoerotic tv series wasn´t exactly sparking new interest in Dune as a whole

Villain-nova only does arthouse stuff. Some is good (Sicario), some is shit (2049) and some is OK (Arrival), but none of it is blockbuster successful. All of his films are low earners. Sicario did OK because it was a low budget, but did 2049 even return its cost + marketing? I don't see how making a Dune will turn him into a blockbuster. It's a franchise that very few of the modern retarderps know about. "Hurrp durrp is it Marvel??"
2049 is beautiful. Cinematography is excellent. But in the end it’s a hollow mess. The story is so thin, so forgettable. Useless and unbelievable characters.

Blade Runner bombed but it has been well covered by the trades on how ill conceived was the idea of making a $185M sequel to a 35 year old bomb. If Dune is another $185M film, I expect it to bomb too.
Arrival did over 4x its budget, so it did fantastic and it does count as a major success.

How much marketing was there for Arrival? Hardly of a big budget blockbuster. It probably did see profit. As did Sicario, which warranted a needless sequel (Villa nueva wasn't involved in that one).

Arrival with $47 mln budget making $200 mln probably only break even.
Around $200 milion dollars made by the movie 40% of it goes to studio. The budget usually doesn't account marketing/promotion money.
Nah, you are thinking of the $150M superhero films, and even those can break even with a 3x multiplier (depending). Arrival, with considerably lower marketing efforts and a 4x multiplier is a great success.
It's the kind of success that gave us 6 -count them- Resident Evil films (actually Arrival has a bigger multiplier than the first 3 of them).

For sure Dune will be more expensive, but if they are any smart (unlike the BR2049 guys) it will be $100M, not more, because bigger budgets than that these days make sense only for superhero flicks and Star Wars.
Judging his profitability based on just his 1 blockbuster is a bit short-sighted IMO so until he makes more films, Arrival counts for me.

Am I the only one that liked the original from Lynch? Also got hooked badly to the all dune games especially the first one...even to this day I play from time to time
I really liked the fanedit that restores the extra scenes from the Extended edition, but better integrated. So yeah, for me it's a good film, albeit also deeply flawed (pacing, narration).
