Thought I'd do a best games of 2023, as this year seems to have been pretty decent in terms of the stuff I have played (more than 3 games!). So here's my list of good games this year. I'll try do an ordered list but they are all worth a play. Surprisingly I've not played many low budget indies this year which is a change of pace.

    1. System Shock Remake
    2. Baldurs Gate 3
    3. Atomic Heart
    4. RE4Make
    5. Dead Space Remake
    6. Armoured Core 6
    7. Against the Storm (Indy, Roguelike Builder)
    8. Signalis (Indy, third person survival horror)
    9. ShowGunners

Games Worth Playing:

System Shock Remake: Never played the original past the starting rooms. Given this was a truly faithful remake I was mind-blown how far ahead of their time looking glass were in terms of this games design, it's like no one has innovated past this game for 25 years.

Baldurs Gate 3: Enjoyed this one from start to finish but worth waiting for several patches or a definitive edition.

Atomic Heart: I played this quite a bit after release on "hard". I thought this was underrated overall given its a solid linear FPS and has Portal style FPS puzzling. I prefer linearity in shooters and while this game had a kind of open-world section to it, I didn't waste much time with it outside picking up weapon upgrades.

RE4Make: Not my favourite Resident evil game, maybe sits in the #4 position for RE games but having never played the original I did really enjoy it with the military complex section being the low-point.

Dead Space Remake: I had played the original once a very long time ago but barely remembered it, so it felt like a new game for me and really enjoyable.

Armoured Core 6: I would give it a 7-8/10, nothing revolutionary but just a solid game across the board. I think FromSoft are a clever studio, I suspect this game didn't cost them an arm and a leg to make, it's just solid maps/environments, a weapon / upgrades system (although the balance is a bit meh), they keep the narrative simple and just let players blow shit up.

Honourable Mentions:

Against the Storm: Is a town builder, but I'd argue there is some innovation here. You essentially play timed 45 minute missions where you have to build into open-ended objectives. Its somewhat roguelike with an overarching unlock progression system. I put 40-50 hours into it so not bad.

Signalis: Is a low budget isometric survival horror game, I gave up mid-way having made poor upgrade choices and somewhat bricking my character. It's not expensive a worth a playthrough if its your thing.

ShowGunners: Decent turn-based Indy with the "Running Man" cyberpunk aesthetic. It lost my attention at around the 85% mark and I didn't beat it though.

Here's my top so far:

1. Baldur's Gate 3
2. System Shock Remake
3. PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo
4. Viewfinder

EDIT: I would add TLOU to that list, but I played it on PS4 before. Very Happy

Didn't play a lot of 2023 games this year, mainly played some oldies or emulated stuff on the Steam Deck.

I will definitely play Dead Space Remake.

Also tons of stuff is yet to be released that I'm going to play. I'm currently on my 3rd playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 before the expansion. Assassin's Creed Mirage comes out in like two weeks. Then Spider-Man 2 comes out in like a month on PS5.

Signalis didn't come out in 2023.

My list so far:
Atomic Heart - Quirky and fun.

System Shock Remake - Because shock-esque gameplay is the best.

Wartales - It's tedious at times but otherwise it's very addictive. There are great additions in store for this one.

Darkest Dungeon 2 - There's a lot to like and dislike about this one, but I'll put it on my list because the highs make it worth the while.

Jagged Alliance 3 - A bit repetitive and rough around the edges, but the fun writing and the gameplay make up for that.

Remnant 2 - What an improvement, I can't wait for the DLCs.

Shadow Gambit - Farewell Mimimi...

Armored Core 6 - Unquestionable Goty

Not on my list:
RE4R is a game I don't get. What was so special back then, because now everything screams not Resident Evil to me. It's an alright action game I guess. This is the first RE in years I haven't even attempted to replay

Hogwarts Legacy's magic dispells in 5-10 hours revealing a Ubisoft-like Harry Potter mostly carried by the accomplishments of the movies in reimagining the books.

Diablo 4 is a freaking joke of game made by people who clearly don't understand the Hack & Slash subgenre.

Baldur's Gate 3 is alright but massively overrated. Definitely goty because fuck bears.

Strafield was a letdown even for someone who didn't have high expectations. It has quite a few missions worth mentioning, but the technical problems are too much to bear.

I didn't get to play (yet):
Dead Space Remake
Blasphemous 2
Lies of P
Amnesia: The Bunker

You might have jumped the gun with this thread because this year has quite a few more promising titles in store for us.

Meh, can add or edit the thread, it's also a bit of a what else did people like this year that I didn't check out. Yet what is left on the radar to release this year though?

Aliens: Dark Descent wasn't bad either, probably a 7/10.
Viewfinder:(@Neon) Looks pretty decent, never heard of it.

1. Armored Core VI
2. Repella Fella
3. Hogwarts Legacy - cause I played it and it was ok I guess
4. Does the pc release of Returnal count? wasn't amazing but it was a bit of fun to play around with

That is about it as far as games I could stomach this year.

Didn't bother to try any of the remakes as I have little interest. Couldn't get past a few hours of Baldur's Gate 3 cause of its shit writing. Diablo IV I gave up after 6 hours of beta as apart from graphics and some abilities feeling good to use, the game was soulless. Starfield was ass.

Need to try Sea of Stars, Blasphemous 2 and Remnant 2 still, and I am looking forward to a few upcoming game so the list will likely drastically change.

my technique for picking goty is if I remember playing it and it stuck with me, it's good. Otherwise it's junkfood slop.

So far games I remember enjoying from 2023:
BG3
Showgunners

if there is anything else, I can't remember it.

I tried the demo earlier today, beautiful game - but is the whole game just short action and then lots of cutscenes or thats just the first part of it? I got bored Sad
