I got a 10TB WD red spinning disk in my machine for my own backups.
And a cheap dual drive Synology with two Ironwolf 10TB disks. Its for backups of my drive (anything you dont have 2 copies of is something your willing to lose). And for streaming movies to the TV, shared to network and drive mapped on all the PC's in the house so kids and wife can store on it from their machines, etc.
And one of these for random disks I need to format, fix from other peoples PC, get files they want of 'dead' PC's for them with a 2TB stuck it in for random storage when not being used for any other the other reasons:

A 2x HDD NAS seems to be like 5x as expensive as this solution though? and for a 2x HDD permanent solution i would want at least 10TB, and i'm not sure i would trust buying e.g old 4+TB drives, from my experience those larger 4TB HDD's are nowhere near as reliable as smaller 1TB and under. i guess it has something to do with them using more platters, more can go wrong.

Yea, I think I paid $200 for my 2 drive synology. But was more for the 'out of the box' network options and apps it had and able to stream movies/music/whatever from it around the house without a lot of setup as my kids and wife are pretty PC novices.
Also accessing it from the internet is nice if I'm at a friends house and need some files/programs/whatever working on their PC or any other reason while there.
Also nice to install syncovery on and have it auto do backups of stuff without needing to use my PC to run it as a program.

yeah accessing it from other places can be good for sure! Long term i will likely get some NAS setup, could be good. I've never really had any kind of backup solution other than perhaps saving something to my old HDD's, so this is just that but more expanded and a bit easier haha

Same, I got tired of having 4 or 5 1-2TB drives laying around of things I never used, but didn't want to lose.
Now I dont even think about it. The NAS box backs up my PC (the things I tell it to not the whole thing) as well as my daughters digital art files, my sons random work/tabletop stuff for his game on his PC, and is simple enough to access from the TV they can download movies/shows they want to see since we got rid of cable and just put in the right folder and go watch, without pestering me to download it on my machine and get it playing on the TV for them.
So I guess a bit off topic as my usage is more than just backup. But still applies as I got it JUST for auto back up and started actually using the other features it had over time.
Figured cloud stage big enough for all of us was $150 a year. Might as well just pay $200 once (the drives I got free from a friend), and also can access it if internet is down.

God knows how much I lost on CD/DVD since I stopped using them. I had about 6-7 of the 50 pack spool holders filled with burned disks. But as I used them less they sat. And eventually just tossed them out.
As I went "I haven't needed them in years, so I never will". But I know there was old art, random pics from online, music stuff, and god knows what of memories of things I was working on that are gone forever, that I forgot was on them to care to keep.

I only backup personal and work related documents and photos using a synology NAS to which I attached a WD Book for a second backup. The NAS stays online 24/7 since its also my personal cloud and my movie server. The WD Book goes into the Safe when we go on vacation.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
