any suggestions for a soundcard which has spdif and with surround support over it?

i was hoping i could use that realtek hack to get surround over spdif, but it just doesn't seem to work for my motherboard, at least i can't get it to work.

Is soundblaster still the best option for surround sound in games? doesn't need to be some expensive card, i just want the surround feature and it needs to have spdif out so i can connect it to my reciever.

fuck it, i connected it the analogue way instead. i heard you get a delayed sound for games if you use spdif.

every soundcard supports surround sound via spdif. what you want is dolby live or dts connect support. that upmixes stereo sound to 5.1 (compressed though, the bandwidth is the limiter here)

supported by the most chips, but in many case not activated due to licensing costs.

whats you mainboard?

on the other side: maybe its better to go the analogue route yes. or do you have the option to grab the sound via hdmi?

yeah it's just not there in the software for the realtek's i've had, this is on a Gigabyte B650 Aorus Pro AX. I messed with it for hours (tried 4 different hacks, some old and some from 2023), uninstalled everything old, reinstalled.. nope, always 2-channel.

No HDMI on my Logitech Z906. I did it with analog cables instead, it sounds fine and "just works" Smile

i also got the z906 and i highly suggest you to use stereo mix. the speakers sound fine, but even if they are 5.1 it's not really meant for dolby or anything like that, they are too weak to sound good then. enable stereo mix, boost up the bass and enjoy them for what they are. Very Happy

in the past i was also using the optical output since like that i could use a longer cable but windows and the drivers gave me too much problems. like for example there was a short delay when you would start sound playback after not using it for some minutes, or that windows would cut the connection because of power saving or some shit even tho the speakers were still running.

both could be disabled with registry entries but after some windows update this wasn't possible anymore so i switched back to the normal analog cable.

i have big studio speakers connected to my computer if i want Stereo, if that's what "stereo mix" is. Though they're not really meant for games but for critical listening, i sometimes prefer the Logitech actually (for games), even if they're a fraction of the cost (they're made to sound nice and not to always bring up what's critical in the mix).

For a small room these are good enough for surround imo, my room is also treated (acoustics). For a living room, no, way too small and they will likely sound very weak, also untreated walls will also make them suck if you play loud enough.
