Look, mEn...

Shitty releases, we had, and WE WILL HAVE this year PLENTY of them (that's for sure!)... But let's focus a bit on what we LIKE until now.

So far, for me it's QUALITY over quantity:

Dead Space - a miracle of a game, excellent, best remake I've played in my life
Resident Evil 4 Remake - another masterpiece, jumped in my top 7 games of all time
System Shock Remake - what a blast from the... you know
Diablo 4 - I'm fucking impressed, I like it a LOT

Nice surprises:

Wratales
Dredge
Hogwarts Legacy

Incoming:

Amnesia The Bunker - looks good
Cyberpunk expansion - looks good / if it will on par with the state of the actual game will be cool
Starfield - if it's like any other Bethesda game, will probably be a success
Baldur's Gate 3 - eh... fuckers turned it into a casual DOS clone, but I'm still going to give it a isodemo

Maybe:

STALKER 2
Alan Wake 2

In conclusion, as a positive old fart that doesn't expect too much from the industry:

Terrible year my boy. I dont like remakes and I'm not gonna pay for the same game with better graphics.
So until now with sf6 and diablo4 I have not bought or played anything new...
7 hours to go until release, damn.. about time to play something else other than dota

This right here.
Only releases I've played from this year so far are:
- Returnal: fun but dropped it at the middle, was annoyed that all my progress went tits up
- Re4remake: was just ok and even that I dropped a bit after getting to the castle.

Played a shit ton more of sdalger anomaly ultrazone (still waiting for the guy's winter zone mod pack), modded morrowind instalation from last year and modded FO3 from 2021 (even managed to solve the only performance issue I was having with that one on this last weekend, yeyyy Laughing).
Went back to these last two due to the dxvk dll magick I found that solved all my performance issues with Black Mesa Def Edition, another release from a few years back Surprised

Expectations for anything else coming out this year: 0

Think that the expectations are nowadays so low, that when something good really happens, it's like the second coming...

I stick to my wheelhouse of tried and true niche games I play. So rare I get a new game unless one in a genre I like is coming. I dont usually do AAA titles. As they hover around the same 2-3 genres and those aren't the genres I get into much.

But for 2023, ones I can report on is ones I bought/was given that came out in 2023 are:

-Sons of Forest: Not bad, survival part is simplistic but didn't expect more than The Forest had.
-Kerbal Space Program 2: Its Kerbals in space, round 2. It's exactly what I imagined a KSP2 would be..KSP with some tweaks and graphic updates.

-Diablo 4: Was given this one. It's...Diablo. Feels like diablo, plays like diablo, is...diablo. If you know diablo games then nothing worth mentioning you dont already know.
Leveling seems WAY too fast. I got to 50 in about 14 hours. All the acts took like 8-10 hours to finish (got sidetracked sometimes). Granted that is with me spamming esc to skip every dialog/scene/whatever on every person that had words to say. As I want my damn horse mount, not listen to every NPC ramble about their problems Razz

To be honest, I think I'm coming close to end of my the gaming hobby. Truth be told, I just really don't enjoy modern games and the design that goes into them. There have been a couple this year that I have played and enjoyed.

Re4Make as I never played the original 10+ year old game?
Dead Space remake - 10+ year old game?
ShowGunners - I like a lot about this game, the theme / settings etc. I'm playing on normal and its a bit too easy, may have been better to put on max difficulty.
System Shock remake - Never really played the original, probably my GOTY.

I'll Rapella Fella too Razz

I don't really have a backlog anymore and occasionally just replay old games I've already beaten. Starfield i know what to expect so no hype, if it generates a massive mod community i'll play it. POE2 probably the only other modern game I'm interested in because of the extreme complexity (and that only applies if you self-impose challenge HCSSF and never read guides - like every modern ARPG derp gamer does).

Completed Hogsworth Legacy and Warhammer 40.000 boltgun

Now its all RE4 remake. Tried out System Shock to see how it runs, so im on the 2nd deck and will prolly take it up again. I like the DE vibes

And for my retro list, it looks like this:

The Punisher
Land of the dead
Country Justice
Made man
SOF 1
Brother in Arms: Eearned in blood.
You are EMPTY.
Contract J.A.C.K
25 to Life
MOH Passific Assault
NOLF 1
Max Payne 3
Alpha Protocol
Call of Duty 2
SOF 2
Duke Nukem Forever 2001 Restoration Project: First Slice
Manhunt 2
Traque
Theyre alive

Pause:

Clives barker undying

And I have to start up with NOLF 2 at some point, but im always somehow sidetracked.

The shitty ones are first time playing, The leaked duke is an exception, it was actuallly pretty good when you expect nothing, just wish they would have released it back in 2001. Alpha Protocol and NOLF1 I played back in the day, but first time iv finished them and I think both are underrated, even tho Alpha Protocol is far from perfect.

The shitty ones first time playing and desperate enough to complete:

Land of the dead
Country Justice
Made man
Traque
Theyre alive
You are EMPTY

Well, since we had a second baby only 17 days ago, my gaming outlook is pretty bleak atm.

If I had time, I'd finish btow on CEMU, start the System Shock remake and play update 8 of Satisfactory once it's out. If I had the time. Sad

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I'm working through my large library of games bought years ago but also have been playing new ones.

I finished Fallen Jedi and started on Jedi Survivor until Diablo 4 came out. Speaking of Diablo, also have been playing Diablo 2 Resurrected a lot.
Hogwarts Legacy was a lot of fun.
Finished Company of Heroes 3
and Death Stranding

For dabbling:
Wartales has been fun
Super Mega Baseball 4
Above Snakes
Farming Sim 2022
American Truck Simulator
Endzone a World Apart
Surviving the Aftermath
Heroes Hour
Last Epoch

I am wanting to start Age of Wonders 4 and Elder Scrolls Online
And looking forward to Jagged Alliance 3 and Starfield

I'm sure I am missing other games that are coming out later this year but don't remember them at this moment.

Besides finishing ME:Legendary Edition and The Witcher 3 for the nth time?

Finishing FO:New Vegas, that was a blast. Not very excited for new releases like TLoU:Part I, Returnal, Atomic Heart... there's an itch they don't scratch Neutral

As someone who isn't into Diablo/aRPGs, dislikes fighting games, co-op stuff, roguelikes, jRPGs and is allergic to Harry Potter, doesn't play Early Access betas and has already recently played all the games that were remade, there hasn't been much to be excited about so far. Still, the competent remakes have indeed been the highlight this year (especially System Shock), which is also a bit sad when one thinks about it.

The new indies that I've played (Everspace 2, Boltgun, Wratales, Showgunners) have been decent, but nothing particularly remarkable in my opinion. However, there are still potentially interesting titles that I've yet to install as well as many more that are scheduled for 2023: Jagged Alliance 3, Baldur's Original Gate 3, Toddfield, Blasphemous 2, Alana Wake 2, Alone in the Dark Reboomake, The Talos Principle 2, Ghostrunner 2, Broken Roads, Shadow Gambit, Turbo Overkill, Trepang2, maybe Hollow Knight Forever, and so on. I don't really think STALKER 2 will make it.

Hopefully the best has yet to come..or more realistically, the worst Cool Face

The patient bear's also waiting for some Yarr Editions (Atomic Heart, Dead Island 2 etc.), plus the ol' backlog is still standing there menacingly and of course, all the great classics are always available for a replay.

I have two kids out of the house (one's a RN now and the other has a year left of commercial aviation in college), and two home (one is starting his senior year and the youngest is starting 7th grade)

I don't really see much of them as my senior is working a lot and my youngest is hanging out with her friends. As a bonus, my wife is usually in bed at 8 so I get a few hours to game Laughing

I guess what I am trying to say is it should get better! Wink
