About a year ago I noticed my harddisk started to act up. So eh I installed a S.M.A.R.T. utility (google it). Lotsa reading errors. I bought a new HDD, 2 TB Seagate Barracuda. It is still lying around somewhere, and my PC died. Sad

Literally.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Thank you for the kind words guys. Neutral

But an update, hear me out (trying DXWarlock wall text style, enjoy!) Wink
I wanted to see Star Trek: Discovery. You should know, I stopped pirating many years ago. A little while back you could watch this on Netflix, but It has been pulled from there and almost everywhere else. You can still watch it on Paramount+. U need a US VPN and an US debit or credit card to open an account there, and I can't guarantee you that it will work. Shite!

So let's pirate this! Since my PC is dead, I thought let's install a torrent client on my smartphone (Moto G6+, oldie one). utorrent is shite on smartphone! So after downloading season 1, I replaced utorrent with LibreTorrent. Dunno if it is a good choice, but it downloaded season 2-4 just fine. I am getting ahead of the story now.

My Moto G6+ has some something like 40 GB free storage, so storing 2 seasons is max. I thought I download a season, and then I am going to watch it while casting it from my phone to Chromecast 4k on my TV/monitor. My WIFI should have enough bandwidth. No worky, picture freezes. Phone is too old. Sad Shite!

Now I have a newer model smartphone lying around, a Moto G32. I am not using it yet because I want to replicate credentials (FF), bookmarks toolbar and links between apparati. That is not going to fly with a dead PC. Sad Hmm maybe I could have replicated that between the 2 phones? Or I just could have used the G32 for casting?

So I am running out of options here, it seems? Scratch Head What was wrong with my PC? I booted it up again, and I managed to start the boot manager, and I have 2 kernels installed: 6.1.x and 5.15.x The OS wants to run 6.1 and that crashes , so I tried 5.15. Hey what? My PC flies again. Some words of wisdom: "Don't operate computers when you are drunk! " But I remember that these 2 kernels couldn't functionally co-exist.

While running 5.15 I got some many GBs of updates, and after reboot PC runs 6.1.31-2
I am a happy camper! Smile Still that HDD needs replacement. Also wondering how a HDD can produce many read errors but no writing errors, otherwise this installation should have died way earlier.

Edit: I completely forgot:
So I have these 1080p mp4 x264 AC3 files. I sent one of them to VLC, and then VLC crashes (pamac remove vlc). I look at the repository for another media player: I found "baka-mplayer". I installed it, but in this player videos can't be paused and after clicking on the play button again, it restarts the vid. baka Scratch Head

Edit2: After that I installed SMPlayer, works nicely!

Bad stuff at home. You are alright, I am just using you to vent bad emotions. I apologize. I really couldn’t assist with Linux partitions/volumes. I barely keep on top of macOS these days.

Regarding reads vs writes, not every filesystem has data validations on write. Most likely, consumer Linux ones doesn’t. ZFS, I think, does, but that’s a bitch to support and run on a home system (also huge memory usage).

For a Linux video player, I’d suggest mpv. Not the prettiest, but much much much better than that shitola VLC. There is a reason I react with “Laughing” on each VLC post. It is absolute garbage.

The funny thing about VLC, on my smartphone it could play the MP4 files, but this phone doesn't have the calculation power to maintain that real time. Every Android phone or linux distro seems to come with preinstalled VLC. Get rid of this shite!

Anyway if you need to blow off some steam, just take a stroll in a park or so. Also 1 hour per day of some physical workout can significantly lower the stress levels. There must be a sport studio near you. Smile

I walk 25km+ daily for the last two and a half years Laughing Trust me, it loses its effectiveness at some point.

That is quite some distance, but a stroll in the park versus some physical workout is quite a difference. I mean if you train using arms, chest and legs at the same time.

Jesus damn. That multiple hours of walking every day. I'll commend you for being able to sacrifice that much time to it. I'm doing it like every second day or so, but it's a hiking trip whcih is quite long

I work from home. It started in the pandemic, it was a way to get out of the house. I lost 35+ kg. Now it’s just a thing I do every day.
