So the partition on my 4TB WD passport USB HDD just up and vanished a few days back when I was about to copy data from a relative's old laptop to their new one. Everything was normal but after a few seconds after plugging it into the new laptop and before transferring the files, the partition straight up vanished.
Ran it on crystaldiskinfo, no SMART related (or any other) errors popped up. Also surface tested it with Partition Master and found nothing amiss.
Tried recovery with all of these so far
- Disk Drill
- EaseUS data recovery
- Disk Genius
- Acronis disk director
- Aomei partition assistant
- Diskinternals partition recovery
- Stellar Phoenix data recovery
And after several 5 to 22 hour scan sessions they can't find a single file.
Regarding data loss, it wasn't that much important, just a ton of cracled games, my complete mod collections for a shit ton of games including some that probably are not online anymore ( ), my emulator folder and some other backups.
I don't need to use the disk right now, so I'm not in a hurry and can leave it as is if there's a chance of recovering that data, even the names would be enough.
But honestly, I'm not sure if I can trust this disk ever again.
Any ideas/suggestions mens?

Also try Active@ Partition Recovery, it doesn't scan for deleted files but attempts to locate the partition boundaries and master file table, so if it isn't a hardware failure, you'll get your partition as it was before.

Ok, after some six hours this one found ~386 lost partitions in a very bad state, but with 0 files on each of them
0 bad sectors too, so at least there's that confirmed... again

Did you try powering it off, then on again?

HDD's are absolute garbage. i stopped using them completely now, these new large 4-8tb ones all die and usually it doesn't take too long, a year, if lucky two-tree years.. throw them out and you'll be a lot happier. never had a SSD failing in 15 years of using them.

i have 20 old (below 1tb) hdds lying around, but unlike most people, i only plug in the one i need when i need em, not a single one died sofar on me, cause they arent running 24/7 : In my country we had like retarded monthly download limits so we just went to lan parties and filled up hardrives with goodies . One drive i couldnt copy a movie from due to bad exctors, but thats a drive from 2004 ish and was just 1 gig of 250 that was kinda lost.
i have now one 3 tb and looking for a 6-8 tb one as a backup for all the other ones, but honestly all the stuff thats on em, i can just stream off the internet these days so might aswel just sell the precious metals inside the cases
i read there is good money for the internals as its some fancy precious metals in em
im actually impressed with all my hdds sofar but as said i never ran em 24/7

Some are good if you are just wanting cold storage. The Purple WD ones for surveillance/camera recording seem to be tanks. Now they are not FAST for read/write, your not running any games off them, or an OS. But for transfering/storing long term where speed/time isnt a huge deal cant bet them.
I got a 4TB WD purple I got in 2016? 2015? that has been on and backing up every 6 hours my NAS box (a backup, of my live storage/backup) and so far not one issue with it.
Its at 66427 "Power on Hours" with 146812 GB "Total Host Writes"

i gave up on them completely even for storage. had a 4TB WD connected to my TV with tons of movies and series. Used it maybe 20-30 times in a year, then it just died. Before that i've had other bigger HDD's that also just lasted 1-2 years, for storage and that hardly ever got used.
i have 8.5TB of SSD storage, getting another 4TB at the end of the month.

are u setting them right next to some speakers or something maybe ? electric fields/ magnetism nearby?
ssds scare me, with their built in ticking down writes and a superhefty premium fee per gig compared to mechanical

nope..
the speed difference alone makes it 100% worth it + feels way more reliable overall. also they're completely quiet and won't heat up your case either..
