Drenthe cleans frogs to prevent the spread of water crassula
Conservationists are taking rigorous measures to prevent the dreaded water crassula from spreading from a fen not far from the Drenthe village of Valthe.
The window is muted. Every frog, toad, salamander and other amphibian from the pond is rinsed clean and quarantined. The animals are only released again when it is clear that they no longer carry the dreaded water crassula.
Not only the animals, but also the boots of the people involved in the work and the tires of the vehicles must be cleaned properly, RTV Drenthe reports.
the reptile working group RAVON caught, cleaned and scrubbed the amphibians one by one, the pond was filled with clean sand from two specially dug pools just a little further on. The amphibians will be released in these new pools. Hundreds of amphibians have now been washed clean.
The Crassula helmsii, or the water crassula, is an example of an invasive exotic that threatens native plants. The plant originally comes from Australia as an ornamental plant, has grown wild and grown exponentially here, making it a real pest species. A minuscule piece of stem of three millimeters can grow into a new plant, writes website Naturetoday. The plant forms dense mats, suffocating other life in the water and closing up the fen.
