Hey guys so I bought a gigabyte 3060 ti eagle oc a few months ago, when the price dropped, without thinking that the reason it was cheap was because it has bad/cheap cooling.

At first I was getting 83C on it, using a really bad case. So I changed the case and the temps dropped to 78C. Then I started undervolting it and temps dropped further to 74C.

But what I noticed was, if I cap my fps at 60, my temps arent even worth monitoring anymore, they drop to something around 65C depending on the game. I do have a 144hz monitor though.

So what should I do ? Should I cap my fps at 60 fps for lower temps and possible longer GPU life ? I've googled a bit and found quite a lot of people that cap it, mentioning longer GPU lifespan.

What do you think ? I'm not playing anything competitive, just some casual call of duty and battlefield every now and then.

why pay for a expensive card and monitor, if you don't use it?! you don't need to worry about the lifespan, since 74-78° is still ok.

does the gpu throttle when it hits 78°? if it does, then improve your cooling, with more case fans or higher manual fan curves. Undervolting is an ok option, if your card has a shit cooler on it and if you don't lose any FPS, or just a few.

if it doesn't throttle, there is nothing you have to do.

74, 78ºC on load is a bad temp for a GPU? dafuq
Like freifrei said, unless it's throttling (check for drops on core and memory clocks at higher temps) then it's all good.
Unless it really heats up your room/office/etc.

My R9 290 was 94ºC under load and never broke (still kicking on my dad's pc). If the heat bothers you because it heats too much your room, use a cap. But don't worry about the lifespan for 74ºC Very Happy

I believe there is some throtling anyways on 3060.. on my 3070 the gou downclocks around 70c from my max OC, but still it is above standart clock.

I am capping my fps in offline games too @60fps... It also helps with electricity bills.😂

I always cap FPS at the max refresh rate of my monitor. But honestly those temps are ok. No need to worry.

Depends on what you mean by longer lifespan to a degree.

Normal expected lifespan? It wont matter really.
Ive had GPUs that have had hours and hours a day near 90 degrees that lasted 6+ years, well they still work past that as far as I know I just stopped knowing if they do. As I dont have them anymore either one of my kids, of a friend has them and still using them.
My old 770 is still kicking it fine in its 4th hand me down in a friends daughters PC and it ran 80+ anytime you gamed on it.
I got a old ass nvidia 260 in my server box that runs 70+ all the time (tiny shit packed case, it idles in there at like 60). And my ancient NVidia 9800+ is around here somewhere and it still works fine and I heat tortured that freak of a dual stacked PCB "SLI in One" space heater for years using it.

But I'm sure extend the life in terms of it will last longer is technically true. But in that aspect by the time it dies it will be so old and outdated not worth keeping anyway.
Just as not heating it up at all would extend extra life to have faaar down the line, and never using the card at all would extend it nearly forever.
So its not a misstatement, its more a misnomer of what extend the life means. It doesnt mean stop it from dying before its time, it means help it live faaaar past any point anyone would want it Razz

Thanks guys, I think I got scared when I first saw it reach 83. I lowered the temps but now I'm still scared, to the point of not using it at all if possible Smile) Wtf is wrong with me Smile)

it's probably a lot of money for you, hardware isn't cheap and you just want to do it right.
you do it right and don't need to worry, just use it Smile

74C is absolutely fine and shouldn't affect anything, even 83C for that matter is also fine.
in any case the gpu will throttle down if it hits the thermal limit.

been using a 1060 for 6+ years now and it always sat at 79C for most of my gaming time.

just play with it and have fun. all new things will become old on their own.

Optional: Replacing the thermal grease and clean the fans should help a little. While your GPU is in no danger of dying on you it may help lowering the fan RPM's to become a bit more silent.

Absolute beast of a card, that one:

And now I'm wondering if there's some throttling going on in there and if with the better cooler he was using the card would run those games a bit better.

I was not very knowledgeable on undervolting and overclocking at the time, but probably I could have reduced temps a few degrees Laughing
