I'll stop hijacking the CPU thread!

I know next to nothing about CPUs but I am moving from an old PC and want to pair the 3080 with something more modern.

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/59325/amd-ryzen-9-7900x-processor

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/59465/corsair-vengeance-rgb-32gb-2x16gb-5600mhz-cl36-ddr5-expo

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/59457/asus-tuf-gaming-x670e-plus-wi-fi-ddr5-motherboard

Anything wrong with that selection or any other recommendations?

Thanks!

You can probably toss your ovens with a combo of 13900 and 4090

Any reason you're not jumping to 6200 mhz while you're going DDR5 anyway?

No good reason, no, today is the first time I've even looked at DDR5 ram

https://www.pccasegear.com/products/59325/amd-ryzen-9-7900x-processor
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/59457/asus-tuf-gaming-x670e-plus-wi-fi-ddr5-motherboard
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/57957/corsair-dominator-rgb-32gb-2x16gb-6000mhz-cl36-ddr5

I think that's a better combo. The only 6200/6400mhz RAM is from some brand I've never heard of. 'Team T-Force'. Sounds like a Power Rangers spin off

Ordered the 7900x + 32GB DDR5 6200mhz RAM

Motherboards that support decent RAM speeds are out of stock everywhere, guess it's time to play the waiting game!

Nice, and not so nice! That was the reason i went DDR4 for my 12900k. Motherboards were everywhere, but ram sticks were nowhere to be found

If you really want just to game then DDR5 and new AMD/Intel CPUs are just not worth the uplift in cost. Same goes for the trash nv 4xxx series.

It's an upgrade for one PC, but another PC in the house is getting a bit of a sidegrade.

The oldest is running a 6 year old CPU. Millenia in PC upgrade years

Gotta love how a $600 motherboard has RAM speeds that top out at ~5200mhz

There's one for $2499 ($1,662 freedom dollars) Laughing

But I thought you weren't rich anymore? Guess that cyberpunk CE sold for a real good price then

Can't you wait a few weeks for mobo+cpu "shootout" reviews from techspot, etc? Assuming they still make those, that is.

I got a job in August after being unemployed since 2018. New work supplied a laptop, so I sold my old laptop and bought a Deck, and now I'm going to pay this off over 8 weeks. Not exactly rich Mr Toni, despite recent purchases

Here's what I think will happen with Intel: they come out with a CPU that requires four personal wind turbines to power, they will be more expensive, they'll run hotter, they will sell out faster, scalpers will grab them first and the motherboard issue will be the same. And it doesn't matter if I'm wrong, at the end of the day the performance gains from either will be more than enough.

And I have 7TB of video to convert multiple times, I reckon the 7900X will murder my current CPU with that task

Id say yes for the next 1-2 years, but noone knows whats in the pipeline.

Depending on your Mobo you may could make an upgrade to a 5800X3D if needed. Also we dont know your GFX Card and what kind you prefer to play, FPS is more GFX dependant and RTS more CPU bound.

ur literally trowing 400 bucks away on the am5 mobo n ram and gonna be a guiny pig for am5 bugs

am4 with a 5800x3D will give u much more bang for ur buck and some insane increases in older titles that are cache hungry

Dont buy any 4xxx series, they are trash. Read the GPU Discussion thread for more info.

That's the plan so far.

I've been looking at boards non-stop since yesterday. It's crazy how much more expensive they are than last gen, yet some don't have PCIE 5.0 slots, some have low RAM speeds, others don't have thunderbolt.

One of them is $860 and doesn't have thunderbolt. One of the ASRock boards comes with a sticker over the dimms that gets stuck in the slots. Another is $600 and doesn't come with an IO shield. Laughing

This shit is getting worse and worse as the years go by

It's really ridiculous. Not long ago midrange motherboards went for $150 and high end from $200 and upwards.

The Ryzen 7k-series platform with it's ridiculously expensive motherboards while only supporting expensive DDR5. There must be a limit to how much they can milk the PC market.

Hopefully the conclusion will be that maybe they overpriced it a bit instead of "well, seems people don't care about pc's anymore"

Unless in a rush, waiting for intel 13th series or even AMD ZEN 4 3D seem as the best strategy. MoBo prices will go down (with the B650 ones) and DDR5 prices as well.

A thing. Ryzen 7000 series goes to 95ºC for max CPU performance, so don't get scared when it happens. You may try to underclock and undervolt to avoid this from happening and get back to 60ºC or so.
