Over thirty years on, Carl Sagan's PBS documentary series "Cosmos" is getting a reboot. Seth MacFarlane, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and show's original writer and producer Ann Druyan have teamed for the project and have released a stunning new trailer which you can see below:

WHY? Sad

Aside from that (hopefully) small drawback, more Neil is always good Smile

Why not? Aside from doing a few mediocre comedy cartoons, he's also a science advocate and communicator. He'll do just fine. Smile

Maybe it's time to rewatch the original Cosmos. That unbounded adoration for the universe from Sagan always brings a tear to my eye. Smile

As long as we are spared from his ever repeating jokes and (from what I've seen so far) shit art I'll be fine with it.

Still can't understand why fox got him for this in the first place but whatever.

IIRC it's a collaboration between Tyson and Seth, and they pitched the idea together. He was chosen more for his involvement in the skeptical community rather than for having friends up high somewhere. At first I was Are You Serious too, but after hearing lots of influential people saying he was a good person for Neil to team up with, I'm good. Smile

He made the show, dno if hes in it. Kudos to him for getting a science grounded show on Network tv.

Yeah, this can only do good things for Fox's audience, we gotta start somewhere...even if it's a battle lost from the start Razz

Faux is as schizophrenic as a company can be. Their news section is an ultra-conservative ideologue, while their entertainment branch is full of irreverent shows like MacFarlane's cartoons. While their pundits cry about the war on Christmas and rubbing shoulders with the Xtian far-right zealots, they are also airing clips from Family Guy that mock their imaginary friend.

It's almost as if their higher ups couldn't give a single shit about politics, only to cater to as wide an audience as possible. Razz

Haha indeed, I think that's the only explanation really. And the fact that Fox itself is the target of a large part of that humour makes it even more oddly contradicting. It's all an elaborate and subtle ploy, they're smarter than we think xD

I'm watching this, and so far it seems nothing but your standard science documentary, Sagan's Cosmos was something else entirely, it focused itself on the history of knowledge and on the passion of discovery, Cosmos was enthralling and Sagan presented facts in such a way where nothing was certain other than the joy of discovery.

Tyson's Cosmos opened up with highly speculative theories being presented as nearly factual, and to be honest its nothing but a text book documentary, wherein Sagan's Cosmos was magic and up to date until this day, Tyso's Cosmos feels nothing but bland.

Well i watched a bit and one thing is certainly clear. DeGrasse is nowhere near as mesmerizing as Sagan was. The effects are top notch, so i will definitely continue watching, but i felt the first ep was a bit all over the place. Maybe because i thought the cartoon about Giordano Bruno was just too stupid. As a show about science do we really need a Disney-like cartoon with sad faces, injustice and whatnot? When he's thrown in jail and then ascended into the "cosmos" i for a moment thought i was watching a religious cartoon about some "martyr". Totally unnecessary if you ask me.

So far it's really different from the original. Hardly surprising, two very different presenters will do such things. Razz

That cartoon segment was kinda unnecessary. Sure the message was important, and I can see the people who are the ones most in need to understand it already dismissing it or skirting around it. The time spent on it could have been used to expand on other stuff. Oh well.

Other than the multiverse idea, pretty much everything was as we understand things now, so I'm pretty much ok with what he presented. Kinda helps that they have a guy who keeps them in check so they don't go into outlandish stuff. Smile

Anyhow, visually spectacular and communicates the message of why science is important. Not a terrible first episode. Nothing like the classic Cosmos' poetic reverence, and I'm glad they didn't try to replicate it.

I expected someone throwing 'Highly speculative' around when seeing the epi. Just because they say that some believe in a multiverse. Something they also said in the original Cosmos Wink

My advice pay more attention to the words so you'll see they aren't selling it as factual.

On the epi:
I don't see it 'that' different than Sagan's cosmos (saw it last month again). It's maybe a tad less artistic and no cold war politics in it. But so far it's pretty much the same with better special fx and another speaker. Tho I got to say that I felt like Tyson was holding himself back, usually there's a lot more passion coming from him. Might be because it's more an ode to Sagan. Smile

That being said I think they did a great job. After all, they target a different audience, one whom they can spark an interest for science. I think this does the job. Most of us already got that from the original Cosmos. I'm watching it for nostalgia, curiousness to the changes and Dr. Tyson.

yea, the cartoon felt like it was from a different episode
they should have cut it entirely and spread out the calendar bit
there were large segments that were very surface deep
like the first generation of stars was very briefly mentioned, and birth of life ignored plantlife entirely, which is the majority of life on the planet

Nope. Watched it. Nope. Nope. Nope.
Production values sucked dick.
Neil was very limited... real passion showed up for a total of 2 minutes.
Nope. Will continue watching and hopefully they'll get into the right pace and the right feel of it.
Right now it's very very very poor.

Loved it. And even though I knew the story between Tyson and Sagan, it still brought a tear to my eyes. Actually many but who cares

This might be an homage to Sagan but it is definitely Tyson's Cosmos and I like it so far and eagerly await the upcoming episodes! Smile

Did to me as well. Was a nice touch to see Tyson with Sagan's agenda. But yeah that story really stuck with me after reading one of his books.
