A friend of mine, John Doe, has to modify a doc with his installed Word 2016.
And the craziest thing happened: it said the version is unregistered! Clearly an obscene mistake.
He could save the WHOLE WORLD from [threat] if he had a simple way to activate this version of Word.
Think of the children. Or don't.

i think you can only activate it with kms, which needs to be done every 180 days again.
get something like mass gravel activation script from github.
you can activate your windows with it permanently (kms38 or hwid) and you can setup a kms for things like office. either do it manually every 180 days, or install it, you will get both options after running the script.
if you install it, windows defender will probably will detect something and even if you put it on the "allow list" it will remove it after some time anyway and detect it again, since windows defender sucks ass. just keep that in mind.
i hate kms activation because of this problem alone, sadly i don't think there is another way for office 2016 and newer versions of it.
maybe if you can get a mak key somehow and then with phone activation, but a working key should be rare to find. or of course you buy a cheap key on ebay and activate it with phone activation, so even if the key gets revoked, your activation will still be valid.

Just buy a cheap key off ebay or so. They are like 2€ for OEM keys. It's definitely a grey area if it's legal or not, but who the hell cares anyway when you could pirate? Found it easier to just use such a key and be good without needing to reenable KMS every few months.

Lost of people do. Nearly every company I work with uses it. As since there is 101 alternative options, making sure whatever option everyone has works 'well' with docs made in everyone else's isn't worth the IT dept/help desk's time to fuss around with troubleshooting why Mary from accounting cannot open the contract on her mail correctly, or at all.
And the two I work with that DONT use it, are a pain in the ass to see as they use google docs with Association accounts (business domain logins). So they have to send me a link, I tell them EVERYTIME I cannot open it as I dont have a email login from thier company, they send me a link I can request access, they approve access..sometime later when they see it..and THEN I can open it. (They cant do public share, dumb idea for company documents).
Now for personal reasons to use it? Not such a long list but there is some. I use it because I get it from work for free for work reasons. I feel a lot of people that get it for that reason, use it at home because they get it free.
I COULD use those others. But excel blows google docs/spreadsheets out the water for features, macros, and complex spreadsheets.
Most companies block random extension mails not on a whitelist. So if I need to send a punch list/doc/whatever it has to be a Word Document with headers/metadata showing it IS a real Word doc and not some exe renamed.
And so on.
Outside of the other options for basic personal use. Open wild west style of "Use whatever free alternative you please, to open and edit documents back and forth to us" is an IT security admins nightmare of end users being compromised by phishing attempts just begging for trouble, and troubleshooting compatibility rabbit holes of hours of wasted time.
