Thatโs an acceptable viewpoint. Since I can have userscripts now on iOS, I have extended NFOHump enough to my liking anyway.

Sorry to bother you again [mrt] , but this forum should have a gossip sub forum for people who confuse world news with gossip.

That's actually on us (admins and esp. mods). The one function I wish I had access to was to create sub-forums (like a sub-forum for RIP posts).
Otherwise the only ones that can clean up sub-forums and move threads to general, useless void etc. are admins and mods. Since the forum has concentrated the active users to a small group of die-hard humpers we've kind of relaxed things a bit. It's not really that important since we don't have several dozens/hundred+ of users online at the same time since the 00's. We do clean up threads when it gets out of hand though, at least most of the time.

I don't really see your point though. The sub-forums that have been proposed deals with topics that are currently posted under World News where they don't belong. Unused sections don't make a difference to the forum, at least not in my opinion. You can remove those sub-forums in your settings I believe.

They make a massive difference
If a new user looks at the place and sees much of it is dead, they'll figure it's not worth sticking around. Like most people will if they hit a dead subreddit, they'll go to a more popular one instead. Less areas to post in also makes it easier for someone to know where to post. And if they need a section that has low traffic (eg: PC technical, Dox etc), they'll be even less inclined to post.
PC games could easily take on the technical, dox, protection, lets play, golden oldies and sharing corner sections with proper thread tagging
Then there are sections like 'NFOhump's Official Perseus Suite'. A section which hasn't seen a new post in almost a decade. More scrolling = less views and posts
Making 'world news' into 'news' with tagging of topics would be better than introducing another subforum / place to click
There's an easy way to see where the dead weight is as well. Go to each subforum/forum and look at the topics on the bottom of the first page. If those topics haven't been posted in for the past 4 - 5 years, it's safe to say they don't get much traffic and aren't needed.
I found no way to remove redundant sub-forums in settings either, and CSS will do a better job since you can cut out all of the dividers, line breaks and so on.

New users? Are you expecting a rebirth of the hump?
phpBB3+ had a built-in pruning function that deleted posts and/or threads etc. after a defined period of time without posts/updates. For 15+ years there were suggestions and attempts to get nfohump updated to phpBB3 but there was just too much custom code to make an upgrade feasible.
I don't expect the hump to suddenly get a massive amount of new users (I can't even think up a reason how that would happen). 90%+ are content with/prefer reddit, twatter etc. for all their social media stuff. It seems most forums these days are run by OEM's, developers and publishers to have a place for users to post bugs, have discussions etc.
You can suggest which parts of the forum you'd like for us to remove (with links) we could look at it and see if we agree. Does that sound fair?

Not now I'm not. It might have been possible, back when I mentioned these same things in 2011/12. Either way, it doesn't mean that continuing to have a shitty user experience should be the way forward.
I can hide what I need with CSS so keeping/removing things at this point will only help those that can't do it themselves

I'm sorry if your user experience is shitty. There's not much I can do about that. I don't feel the same about the state of NFOHump but I can sympathize with your opinions/views to a certain degree. I guess I like the nostalgia of opening NFOHump and experience something that hasn't been tainted by all the trends, social media feeds, gimmicks etc. that later platforms have.
Btw, is it difficult to make your CSS solution usable by other users who might feel the same way you do? If not, perhaps you could make it available to those that have enough knowledge and the right setup to use it?

Yeah i think your on-point, the forum lost some significant key contributors that used to dig up all sorts of stuff specifically in game development I couldn't find anywhere else. We had game developers of relatively large studios occasionally dropping in here at one point as well. You pretty much couldn't find a better news source for games and entertainment than this forum for a long time.
Times kinda change:
Nfo's and scene are pretty much dead now.
PC-Centric games pretty much non-existent.
The trolling, although many snowflakes imploded or took issue if someone didn't agree with them, whittling down the user-base.
-> this is what attracted new people to the forum over the years.
Now we just a community of the longstanding users, nothing wrong with that. In present state its not positioned for new users, even word of mouth "hey come shit talk on this board" is a hard sell to a newcomer. There's nothing unique here any longer you can't find elsewhere. You could consolidate sections and revamp to be more focused on community chat, it would make it more appealing to word of mouth "come shit talk with this community", I dunno.

Only if they feel the exact same way, otherwise the rules would need to be rewritten
The forum experience is objectively shitty, it doesn't really come down to opinion. No support of common media formats, doesn't work properly on anything other than a medium/large sized screen, buttons too small on the phone, cookies are stuffed, there are loads of issues.
All of which were fixed in the PHPBB3 theme from years ago. And funnily enough, by today's standards, even that PHPBB3 theme's code is out of date
AmpegV4 wrote: | There's nothing unique here any longer you can't find elsewhere |
I don't know about that
It seems you either use social media, reddit and that sort of thing where nobody knows anybody else or you go to a forum like NeoGAF/Resetera where everything is politically motivated and your posts are drowned out by the sheer amount of users contributing
I like smaller forums, it's just sad that we can't make things better ourselves. I mean, we can, and we do, but the admins won't let us do it the right way. One of my last posts on the matter was me writing out CSS code that could be added ANYWHERE to the CSS files and it'd make the site work perfectly on phones.

Yeah true that. I like here i have a rough idea who is posting, where they are from and what their world views are whether I agree with them or not. You could certainly build another site and migrate across if someone wanted to put the effort in, you could certainly consolidate topics to the area's that get most traffic.
The thing is, if your seeking new members and growth it needs some kind of edge to draw contributors in (i.e nfo's and scene news, gaming discussion like in the past). There was nowhere better than here for that info, there is no edge for that anymore. I always thought 5+ or so years ago a complete rebrand to just a flat gaming community could have worked with our contributors, but the big contributors (off top head, Sabin gaming and Weralds across hardware for example left). Maybe a new site would coax some users back to give it a chance but also maybe not.
