Why would they go Epic exclusive when they have GOG?

Doubt it will be just on epic. Epic is paying devs based on a sale estimate they come up with for the period of time the game is exclusive on epic store. They'd have to shell out like 500 million for a game of this magnitude, or more. After Cyberpunk was the 3rd biggest pc game in history on steam and made so much money, not launching a Witcher game on steam would be too stupid to even comprehend.

Fantastic news! Finally they realised the should stick to Witcherverse games.
Tbh, though, I kinda liked their own engine. The graphics were always pretty good and never too heavy on my rig. With unreal I fear they will face problems unless they somehow "hybridize" them both...though fat chance of that happening.
Still good news!

Why new engine, I don't get it. Witcher 3 with mods looks amazing.
I have a bad feeling about this.

Maybe it is ’new’ as so many times before.

This will be a low risk cash cow. A Ubiesque game like Witcher 3 with a much smaller scope, 1/2 the size of Witcher 3. UE5 probably cheaper on all aspects. The Witcher franchise will sell itself so no need for any inovation.

Here's what I READ:
The Witcher... blah blah... Unreal Engine 5... blah blah... Epic Games... blah blah... Unreal Engine 5... blah blah... Epic Games... blah blah... Unreal Engine 5... blah blah... Cyberpunk 2077.

And here's what I UNDERSTAND:
The Witcher... blah blah... TIMMY... blah blah... TIMMY... blah blah... TIMMY... blah blah... TIMMY... blah blah... TIMMEH!!!!111... blah blah... Cyberpunk 2077.

Ditching the engine is probably the right move even though it can produce great games (Witcher 3) and provides a market differentiator. They no longer have to source and hire talent for the engine, they can hire any derp with UE5 experience etc.
I'm nerdy enough to be interested / care about the engine, but gamers / target market couldn't care less, it seems a wasted expense and they clearly struggled with it for Cyberpunk.

UE is terrible, though. UE went from leading in PQ to drowning in ugly screen space effects. I’m really not sure which is worse at this point.

I more think about the talent pool, it seems like 2020 AAA game development is in a rough spot. The output from EA, Activision, Bethesda and CDPR has been awful, EA couldn't even produce basic character animations properly in ME:A. Just about every release from a large publisher has had obvious technical flaws like they can't hire semi-competent developers.
Like the older guys have finally retired and moved on to other things and we're in the hands of GenY dev's that can't code for shit and only know higher level languages, they basically forced to adopt an engine they can hire people that have experience with.

Ya i guess tried to do too much in one go with Cyberpunk, they could have reduced scope and gone with a semi-linear fps with great graphics, then tried the openworld thing Cyberpunk2. Meh whats done is done.
