Based on Jake Adelstein's non-fiction first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe. The drama captures Adelstein's daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem. Streaming April 7 on HBO Max.

Looks like a dope diluted with baby powder. HBO Max means shitty low bitrate 1080p web-dls. In 2022. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️

They may use this as to release low bitrate 4k hdr content. You know their biggest show of the year
seems a bit late this series to still draw on yakuza flair, the yakuza are like almost completely wiped out after they did some public murders a decade ago and cops finally cracked down on their bosses and money, and most ex yakuza are now like broke, tatood 60+plussers homeless and dispized with no pension , i remember seeying in some youtube doc
or maybe this is that story/start of their downfall ?
The Yakuza are still very active, and although Yakuza membership has declined since the implementation of the Anti-Boryokudan Act in 1992, there are still approximately 12,300 active Yakuza members in Japan as of 2021, although it is possible that they are a lot more active than statistics say.[1]
the first episode is very good directed, 2-3 just slows down, still good so far though. just goes to show you how much of an improvement a good director can make.
The first episode is so different from the rest, even down to subtitle format. This is not a “Michael Mann” show in the sense that they try to keep his style and direction, like Luck used to be. It’s a Mann directed pilot to sell to HBO, then Mann has nothing to do with it.
well they do try to keep his style but just cant replicate.
How do they try exactly? Michael Mann does not like a single static frame, and indeed, in the first episode, the camera is constantly moving, the focus shifting, even, perhaps, to a fault. Mann uses shallow depth of field to focus on very specific parts of each scene. Enter episode 2, and you have long static takes, with much deeper depth of field. I think even the cameras used between the first episode and the other two are different.
they try to do shaky handheld 1 camera style, you can see it in the trailer with scenes not from the first episode, of course there are other aspects to mans directing but you cant replicate everything.
just too bad couse first episode has almost a different vibe
so whats going on, they fired the pilot director after they secured the funding ?
Doesn't work like this. Scorsese also directed a pilot, Ridley Scott as well... you get the idea.
They bring in big names to lure in the crowd. Also the dp in first EP is a good one. (Gonna check out American Rust.) I'm saddened to hear it take a dive after 1st EP.
Was gonna watch ep 2 tonight

Shaky handheld is not a Michael Mann style. I said “moving”, not “shaky”. Yes, Mann has mastered this style, but they could certainly try harder.
Peter Berg is capable of emulating Mann’s visual style pretty well, but he seems to be stuck directing shitty Marky Mark Wahlberg crapolas these days.
What a strange culture Japcrapan is, they pay a fortune to sit in a bar with OK looking women, who just smile and say the words these men want to hear. And they listen to the women do terrible karaoke versions of bad songs. And they don’t have sex with them at the end. No intellectual challenge whatsoever and no happy ending.

Also it seems like by episode 4, everyone started speaking English almost exclusively, out of “respect” for Jake, including a Yakuza underboss. Japan is clearly known for their English knowledge and respect for its foreigners
