Well things have been going very good for me, ive been a team lead on a small tech company, underpayed but i asked for a raise... i proved myself... my boss decides to move to another company... so i get my raise and all his work, client we work for didnt consider me up to the task... ok ill take my raise.... 35% good enough. So i work my ass off and 3 months later i say "Hey, ive shown them what i am, my expectation is 40% of my current pay to match market value". Oh boy did they not like that. Obviously they have their hands tied, im managing the whole project for the company, pushing improvements, etc etc... noone can replace me at the moment so here we go "client wont accept the rate increase etc etc but we will eat the cost but i dont wanna see salary negotiations for some time, what is your number" i set my number that im happy with and i get it.
Did i mention they didnt like it? Their attitude and tone was so out of touch with how they usually are. Well im just valuating myself.
Bad part? im so insecure now, i feel they will find whoever appears to replace me for a lower cost. Oh well.... i was going to search for my expected salary with them or not. But i really wanted them to understand and value me, i feel i just pressed them into it, dont feel bad because of that, i feel bad that they didnt understand or see my value that im putting on the table.
Hope i dont get fired in a few months , but i did get my dream salary so 50/50!
Edit: Well my wife also has a great salary and we have savings so i guess i can face my first firing ever in my life.

Sounds like you should already work on alternative opportunities and have one ready, or even use it pre-emptively as it sounds like your workplace can't really pay you what you want.
It also sounds as if your company is a services company. Usually services companies can only pay their employees a certain amount without going under, unless they're able to make the client pay more. What this causes, is that even if you're the #1 dev in the world, the company can't pay you market standard rates.
In product companies on the other hand, this is less of an issue because they relationship between their profit to your time, is much more indirect. A developer may ask a hypothetical $1m salary for 1% DB query optimization, and it would actually make tons of sense for the employer to pay it (imagine a google/fb like company).

Well they did pay the whole company all expenses payed to a very expensive resort, even flying everyone from other countries and even recently hired people. Come onnnnn, they are making bank. But im glad we did come to an agreement, i still think im heavily underpayed but hey, im getting so much experience, why not hold for a while.
Also BF2042 fucking sucks |
Sounds like my previous company
It was objectively a horrible place, only thing that mattered to the owners was a prestigious image. We had yearly events where we were flown to with private planes etc... But the pay was then like 40-60% under the average, advancement possibilities - 0, all tools and systems were self developed (they made sure that the people working on the core things stayed 100% within the internal tools - ie... you had no reason / no opportunity to learn something you could directly use elsewhere).
I also finally after 10 years changed to a modern company with much higher salary, homeoffice, benefits (previous company had literally 'no' benefits (from European point of view - sick leave is not a benefit))... all great...
And yea BF 2042 is quite rough :'(
