Anyone seen this?
How is there no thread for it? lol
Today its number 1 on Netflix in the UK!
And 100 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes!

Id never heard about it until my 12 year old daughter told me about it a few days ago, thanks to TikTok!

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10036823/Is-twisted-TV-Ultraviolent-Korean-survival-series-Squid-Game.html

Quote:
Is this the most twisted series on TV? Netflix's Squid Game about a fictional Battle Royale-style game show with scenes of organ harvesting, torture and death squad killings is slammed for 'excessive violence and gore' by viewers. But some TV fans have been left repulsed by the excessive violence, with several saying they could not even make it through the first episode - and others recommending it be banned for viewers under 20 because it is 'too gory'.

Doesn't sound suitable for her to me!

I've seen it. Pretty fun show.

And if you seriously asking if your 12 year old can watch it than no - it's violent, there is sex in it too.

Don't watch it with the kid. It's a good show, but I guess it's a little bit more enjoyable for korean viewers because of the chosen games.

Oh and skip the last 30 minutes of the last episode.

Yeah, fun show, but very violent so definitely not for children Laughing
It's somewhat a mix between Battle Royale and Alice in Borderland.

But I agree that it tends to drag at times, just to increase screen time, it feels. For example, the whole arc of the players returning to the world to come back voluntarily was not necessary, I think. After the great pilot, the 2nd episode is a real drag.

The cop story also went completely nowhere Smile

(in the end, I like Alice in Borderland more, less filler)

Does it "end" after the first season? Or is it again one of those BS Netflix series that get an interesting Season 1, only to wait 2 years for a disappointing Season 2 that doesn't go anywhere?

It's a somehow closed story. People want the creator to do a second season but he tries to dismiss this pleads and I hope he does. I hate catering to fans and making something subpar.

Yeah was pretty good show, nice story arc and properly finished. They will probably make some really bad sequels or a America version. The majority of people just want unlimited horse beating of every franchise no matter how terrible it gets.. just look at.. any franchise.

There are people on this forum excited for matrix 4 Laughing

Best show of the year imo. New and fresh untouched by Hollywood cucks Very Happy

Music is great. Ending was ok. Only thing that was kinda frustrating was reading subtitles and pay attention at what is happening on the screen at the same time and also keep track of peoples names as im not familiarized with them. As i said not really cared too much because the show was good regardless.

8.5/10

If theres going to be a S2 hopefully it will be set in other part of the world and bring new games with new people, but 1 season was enough imo as we all know everything that comes after S1 > bad Laughing

I started watching it today, it's really good.

It reminds me of the Danganronpa games in some ways, I know that the "killing game" aspect got hugely popular around 5/6 years ago, but I liked the way it was portrayed in this one.

Seems like some heavy marketing or pure luck or people just excited to see K-Drama on Netflix with dubs day 1.

The first half was okay but 2nd half was total crap and doesn't warrant the hype. The whole VIPs, acting, pacing, police guy, ending, all sucked. Embarassed

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Yes, apart from the games themselves, the show is a bit of a drag and has many substories going absolutely nowhere. There's also this organ smuggling thing with the doctor that just ended.

Would have been better if it was limited to 6 episodes (one per game), similar to Alice.

It was fun, some of the side stories were dispensable indeed but the pacing was mostly fine to me, a very nice watch ! 8.5/10 for me.
I did get strong deja vu vibes since there are so many mangas/animes based on that battle royale-ish kind of life-and-death game ; the scenes, betrayals and character tropes tend to always be the same, it was very solid at delivering it though !

However.. the grand prize's figure is too low considering how big the thing appears to be.. people would be killing each other for only that much ? Meh ! I'd ask for more Razz

It's not fundamentally different, like I wrote above it's more of the same situations and tragic dilemmas at its core, but it's a pretty good delivery which is more firmly rooted in real life than most other movies in that genre, the whole

. Some story twists will be unique to this story.
The production is pretty damn nice too, it's not too long either.. and you'll get to know about the hottest series of the moment.. ? Very Happy Laughing

Shiiit. Play a gameshow and me win just enough to pay off my house and some jetski money left over, and I'd stab a stranger to death in the face with a fork, or whatever way is entertaining to the game creators. Give me enough prize money for just a good dinner and I'd kneecap someone for the crowd.
They signed up for it too..they knew the risks (I'm assuming they signed up, I haven't seen the show).

It was alright but the last 30 mins were absolute gobshite.

Plus so many undeveloped story lines, eg the police Man. And don’t get me started on that cliff side twist, super retarded.

Closed arc? he seemed to either gun for revenge (which doesn't suit his personality as he's somewhat of a paragon) or rejoin the next round. Nothing is closed and the way they left the ending open to interpretation makes it just another open ending.

I guess I'm the only one that really enjoyed this show.

8.5/10 as far as I'm concerned. It's more engaging and tense than some of the better known death game shows/movies like The Hunger Games which looked shiny and had some interesting moments but was ultimately very boring with silly or unengaging characters.. or other YA movies like Maze Runner etc.

Squid Game is well thought out and presented with some engaging characters and stories. IMHO of course. Wink

I do hope there will be a second season, it all depends on WB Korea* and the writer/director can get other writers and directors to work on it. He wrote and directed every single episode of this first season and apparently feel quite tired of it after having worked on it for over 2 years.

Quote:
"I don’t have well developed plans for 'Squid Game 2.' It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors," he said.

(* - Warner Bros. Korea ceased their business in South Korea so ignore that)
