3dfx Interactive, the former GPU maker, announced via its a Twitter account mentions that it will return to the market after 20-years, at least a big announcement is to be expected.

The manufacturer of the iconic Voodoo graphics cards was declared bankrupt in October 2002, Nvidia acquired nearly all patents and the Voodoo trademarks in 2000. It's unclear how the firm intends to return, although it's possible that it wants to create devices leveraging Arm's GPU methods.

It is conceivable that the Twitter account is not legitimate and is only a prank. Nonetheless, the tweet promises an announcement for next Thursday.

Unfortunately, the firm no longer has a website, so we can only relay this tweet. Disclaimers enough right?

Play it like its 1998!

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Those Voodoo cards were way too expensive. Never owned one.

And they were 3d cards and you had to have another 2d card to. it was an expansion card for 3d graphic. I had maxtor with vodoo 3.

Voodoo 3? You are mixing that up. V1 yes, maybe even V2. I didn't need a seperate 2D card for my V3.

Exactly, Voodoo 1 and 2 were 3D-only accelerators, Rush/Banshee/3/4 were full graphics cards.

I had Voodoo 2 and 3, bought them cheaply because it was already the era of GeForce 256 and GF2 respectively, had a great time with them (plus early Direct3D rasterisation and color quality was really shit compared to Glide).

It would be interesting to see what was included in the acquirement. NVIDIA still owns the SLI and such technologies.

Either way I really hope that they pull it out somehow and actually release new GPUs. How amazing it would be to have AMD, NVIDIA, Intel and 3dfx (can't ever remeber the last time I even wrote this name ) to compete against each other.

I tend to agree... it's a hoax.

Quote:
First of all, one would imagine a big company making a return would ensure its first tweet was proofread. Secondly, there's the image, which was created by a fan (vermaden) and posted to DeviantArt back in 2014. And most tellingly of all, the account has not been verified with Twitter's blue tick.

I was wrong. I found a leaked image of a new prototype 3fdx card Razz

In all seriousness, I really liked 3dfx products. I had a Voodoo 2 12MB, a Voodoo 3 3000 and a Voodoo 5 5500, the last one which for a time was pretty damn good until DírectX and new games all used hardware T&L at which point the Voodoo 5 was instantly obsolete. The Voodoo 5 is a perfect example of everything a once-leading GPU company can do wrong and f*ck their own business to hell. After the mega-successes of the Voodoo 1 and 2 cards as well as the Voodoo 3 3000 it was ultimately their hubris and arrogance that destroyed them.

Instead of really innovating their tech they were complacent enough to make some incremental improvements, create a single-board dual chip (2 VSA-100's) in order to use brute force to improve performance and allow for increased resolutions. The biggest reason was that they no longer sold their GPU's to third party manufacturers, instead spending a ridiculous amount of their money to buy STB and manufacture the cards by themselves which was just too expensive for the company both in terms of money and time.

They were so focused on that goal that the actual R&D and development of the next generation (the VSA-100 generation, Voodoo 4/5) suffered so much that the flagship product, the Voodoo 5 5500 with it's dual-chip solution, was too expensive to make and too late to the party. At it's very delayed release in may/june 2000 it was indeed the fastest card on the market, easily beating the Geforce 256 and ATI Rage Maxx... and soon after the Geforce 2 GTS was released and the Voodoo 5 was obsolete. When using hardware T&L is ran circles around the V5. Nvidia also released the Geforce 2 MX which was a very affordable product, something 3dfx just didn't have even though they tried to get the Voodoo 4 4500 (single-chip VSA-100 card) out of the door but realizing it was too late since they had already lost the race.

Oh well. 3dfx, thanks for bringing proper 3D GPU tech to the PC world. They jumpstarted the 3D acceleration boom and I don't dare to think of how things might have turned out if the guys building arcade machine hardware hadn't taken a shot at the PC market. Cards like S3 Nvidia NV1, Nvidia Riva 128, ATI Rage 1, Nvidia Riva TNT and the infamous S3 ViRGE which became known as the "S3 3D decelerator" . Laughing
