|
 |
hey guys
so as the title says, my old laptop kinda sucks so planning on getting a new one. i am not necessarily in a hurry though.
it is mostly going to be used for office stuff, maybe even a convertible but above all it should be small and portable (something like 13,3", <1,5kg , <1,7mm height)
now i was thinking to get an Iris XE equipped i7 which would have the added benefit of enabling some light gaming (considering that you cannot really get your hands on AMD here atm anyway).
however, the more reading i did the more feasible it seems to wait for Jan. 2022 and AMD to finally ditch vega for rdna2 ryzens.
tl;dr: buy intel equipped iris laptop now or wait for rembrandt?

iris has driver issues for gaming, intels gaming division is a fraction of what amd/nvidia have and it shows on the portable handhelds using intel with flickering, locksups and crashes to some older games not even starting . Why do u need to wait when there is plenty of 2500u-3500u-4500u-5500u combinations to choose from new/second hand that u can then resell when a few months of warrantly left at 80% the value
my 3500u runs everything i want to game just fine with just 8 gigs of ram dual channel
amd has unbeatable value atm in the 300-600 prize range

big warning, i went for a 14 inch for increased portability/battery life, and im regretting it, its just a bit to tiny to really enjoy a game on as im used to big screens all my life ,even smaller u will need eagle eyes to see anything in a game with laptop on ur lap, luckily the amd power is plenty to hook up to any full hd big panel or tv and enjoy it that way

thanks for the reply.
i see your point. but as i said i am not really in a hurry per se to get a new laptop. and i know my laziness, i probably couldnt be arsed to resell the laptop just a couple months after buying it. so i figure ill just wait and see what AMD cooks up next.

Been a while since checking out latops and AMD having good offerings makes it interesting.
Still for laptop you really need to scope how your going to use it. If your looking for a rock solid work machine and play very little games, my default based on which is better cost is dell xps 13, macbook pro 13 and lenovo carbon series thats always overpriced.
I actually like intels shitty iris gpu because:
a) works perfectly for linux and osx, has enough performance to drive GUI well.
b) doesn't take off like a harrier jet engine and doesn't reduce battery life to 10mins.
c) has enough power for snes, psp etc emulation, runs pixelart games if you must.
For me battery life is the king for workhorse laptop purchase, i havn't checked what AMD are offering though so maybe they have all bases covered. If so i guess i'd look at that AMD ms surface? Apples M1 is also looking damn good as well.
i'll never buy a asus, hp, msi, razor, acer, crap crap brand that falls apart <12mo again.

13"? Ew, get away from me
Anyway, got a work laptop with that cpu and some shitty iris igpu a few weeks back, pretty pleased with it so far so you probably will too.

I'd probably go the i5 there as well ^, massive price jump I don't think its worth the hike.
Obviously not sure your budget, I've had 5-6x $1K laptops, and 2x $2K laptops. I really feel that $2K is peak laptop value price. You get a machine that behaves like a proper PC outside gaming, want to run 6x VM's and orchestrate a pile of infrastructure = no problems. 10 hours battery life? = no problems for at least 2 years.
To offset the cost, i buy a spare battery for $60 and swap over once the original starts to lose its charge (use an app to get test health). This one I'm using now is 2018 on battery 2, still getting 8-10 hours, still does everything like a boss. Once this one either has a screen shatter or dead battery will probably replace with another $2K model.
Same strategy with phones except peak value is $600-800, buy the $30 spare battery up front, swap over and replace phone after 4-5 years.
The only thing you cant do is complete smash / destroy the device with no excuse for warranty claim then your $2K is fuked.
