It is not without good reason that gods and men chose this place to build our city: these hills with their pure air; this convenient river by which crops may be floated down from the interior and foreign commodities brought up; a sea handy to our needs, but far enough away to guard us from foreign fleets; our situation in the very centre of Italy. All these advantages shape this most favoured of sites into a city destined for glory.
Is Vikings good really? Heard it's bad. I've had it since it was released
I've tried the first games a couple of times but i just can't get into it, partially because of the poor graphics perhaps.
Well, it had it's flaws and shortcuts till the end of a game but after all I remember it as pleasent experience. I remember I had a blast for quite some time.

Played the demo of this a few days ago - fuckin' great game!
First off, it's rare for developers to have any confidence whatsoever in their games anymore, almost all of them relying on bullshit cinematic trailers or pre-scripted "gameplay" to sucker in the sales. Failing either of those, they all fall back into the early access bullshit. The fact that these guys released a demo, and a damned good one at that, speaks volumes.
Second, the demo starts from the beginning of the game, and plays sequentially and normally, hence demo saves will be compatible with the full version of the game once it drops - no having to start over!
Looking forward to this one!

Yeah, well... gonna buy this one for sure.
I wonder is there going to be box version?
I have boxed E:Vikings on my shelf... EDIT: Nvm, it looks like there is going to be box version as well! Yay!

I too liked the demo, although the game has been dumbed down since Vikings... which is bad. There were also some unclear, even downright confusing issues with the map and quest completion.
I need to go back and play Vikings. For some reason I got sidetracked when playing that one.

Me too, but I re-installed Vikings after I finished the Rome demo, and it was (well: is) much deeper in every aspect.
The only regard Rome seems to have improved upon the original is the "cinematic" storytelling. Meh...
Oh, and the UI in Rome is absolutely horrendous. First, why isn't it possible to toggle the quest log display, and second: why does it take up almost 1/4th of the screen?!

After going back and trying to play Vikings - I now remember why I never finished it - so many of the combat mechanics were piss poorly thought out.
Shields in Vikings are completely useless - 5%, MAYBE 10% chance to be utilized per defense if you're lucky starting out? Worthless. They also do fuck all against arrows, even from the front. Rome rectifies this by guaranteeing their use until they absorb a certain amount of damage at which point an action/charge has to be spent to get them back up.
Archers in Vikings are incredibly overpowered, in large part due to shields' ill conceived combat mechanics covered in the previous point.
Time limits on events and campaign stuff. I'd like to take my time exploring should supplies allow. Fuck time limited shit.
Dozens of useless skills spread across 5 or 6 different trees. All the camping and crafting crap. A dozen or so "random" skills that are incredibly situational in that last category.
So, yes, while Rome could be considered overly simplified in terms of stat distribution (or lack thereof), it'll almost certainly a far better game in large part due to streamlining a lot of that crap out. I'm not usually a fan of streamlining, but in this case it was sorely needed. I'd like to play the game and focus on tactics, not a point distribution excel spreadsheet.
The biggest one up Rome seems to have on it is the combat however. It flows better, the abilities and mechanics seem much more thoroughly thought out, and overall just seems more balanced throughout.
Guess I'll see come the 20th.

Agree that combat seems to be better in Rome (I didn't finish Vikings, either, mainly due to its time-limited missions), but I'm not too happy about the reduction in available skills.

Holy fucking shit you've gotta be kidding me! Has the entire world lost its fucking mind? When will this utter madness end?
ROME is their best game to date, and they abandon it to go work on some ponzi scheme NFT MMO catered to the Chinese market? Just...holy shit.

Well, I, for one, am having a gran' old time with this.
The Legion battles and such should have been made more enjoyable (some tactical choices or something, a proper mini-game blown into a bigger proportion than just "cards" choice).
Also, the only major issue you might have during the campaign are the random encounters (and not actual random fights, but the "lol, x is injured", which makes you run in circle until they are healthy again, because you can't start some story-missions without your core crew at 100%)
Once the story ball is rolling, taking over the map is just slowed by those missions. On difficulty 3/4, I had to restart some battles where you have to choose team members for specific parts of a battle, because the gimmick wasn't explained good enough, and the objectives almost impossible to achieve without knowing that part of the map, and knowing which specialty makes it just possible (anybody in Africa should know about what I call the "burn 2 bridges" mission).
It's an otherwise pretty fun, well-written experience so far, and if those "bastard games" (this one is mostly a tactical turn-by-turn squad battle, with some easy-to-manage strategic/economic components, and a global map for each campain).
If that's the type of game that might tickle your fancy, you just might have a good time, I think
It's pretty good, and my only major complaint so far (still at the end of Act 2), is having to return to the camp to upgrade stuff or send people off to heal for free after they've been stung by their 15th scorpion. You'd think they'd somehow get immunity to the venom.
And I know, it's realistic and all that, and normally I wouldn't mind, but the loading times to load into camp is what's killing me.
Also I regret going Veles. Overwatch + high crit chance is just so good.

2/3 Princeps + 1/2 Triarii + 2/3 Sagittarus (only few situations justify having 2 archers and not 3).
Lots of " / " there, so a "lot" of layway when it comes to building you killer crew.
And while I'm sure any structure might get a win, mine is just the "always safe, never sorry" type.
Just finished this today in roughly 65 hours. Sure, while it had it faults - crafting was largely useless apart from making the Legendary items and consumables, and Hard got incredibly easy towards the final two acts - it was still a fucking wonderful game.
What sticks with me is that every major (and some not so major, but actually turned out to be incredibly important) decisions had an impact on the ending. Also, all of your companions, and some minor characters, got lengthy expositions in the ending cinematic letting you know what they went on to do and how they spent the remainder of their days. Choices really did matter (much more-so than in most Bioware games), and while I'm not so sure that I reached the "optimal ending" it was one where I could hold my head high and be happy with. Its been a long time since a game wrapped things up so beautifully.
The two major tips I'd have for those just starting - firstly, make sure to pick the Logic conversation skill when creating your character. I'd say that of all the conversations I found myself in, 80% had logic triggers, while 20% had strength/emotion appeal triggers. They did NOT do a very good job at making those skills equally distributed.
Second - don't be afraid to use your consumables liberally. They're all fairly easily replenished at the tent apart from bandages and fire-pots - and they definitely turn the tide of battle.
This was Logic Artists piece de resistance, and its a goddamned shame that their boss saw fit to have them scrap the company and move on the some Chinese MMO NFT crypto bullshit. Just when a studio has found its footing, the greedy, clueless cunt at the top pulls the rug out from a team that has finally meshed well and created something worthy. So sad, tragic really.
