I need to vent.

Always wanted a coupe car and having a rough last half year at work I decided to cheer my self up by buying one. Found one for cheap but needing some body work with a minor undercarriage perforation to do. But being fucking stupid as fuckity fuck I bought it.

So... apparently it's a miracle to find someone who does the rust fixes on undercarriage and when I found one, yeah it's cheap around 100-150€/$ but I have to fix car sills but... it's a coupe so I need to fix the wheel arches too. So the overall price rounded up to 2K €. I bought the car for 1.5K €.

Don't be me don't be stupid.

Here's the lemon.

And the lemon with my two other cars.

The worst part: I love the line of that piece of shit. Even though it's the worst driving car from the pack.

Really pretty car! Shame about the rust. German import car I guess? Btw don't you want to hide your number plate?

Nah. What they can get from it? The insurance?

And yeah originally from Germany. Looking for some cheaper shop that would do it without full rebuild.

We gotta call Xzibit and add some fancy lime body painting and a flame decal to that bad boy, a custom whale tail wing, bouncy hydraulics too, throw away those bland rims and replace 'em with Swarovski ones, install a bunch of flat screens inside and you'll get a spittin' Kurwamobile!

Joking aside it's looking nice indeed. Enjoy it, you did the right thing, sometimes you have to treat yourself Very Happy

Rust = Hell. Most if not all people that work with repairing cars absolutely HATE fixing rust damage. I've never left a car of mine that had rust damage to a repair shop since it would be insanely expensive. I had a friend who fixed all my rust issues (he was a mechanic but spent most of his time on his own and his friends cars) for a quarter of the price or less than a workshop would've charged. Besides, I bought most of my cars through him so he probably felt sympathy and wanted to help me out of some sense of responsibility.

I haven't had a car since the automatic transmission on my chipped and trimmed Audi A4 totally collapsed. It stood for a long time (from early autumn to late spring the year after) and the battery had gone totally flat. This led to the engine computer to lose every piece of data (including the key coding, the remote coding etc.) and I couldn't start the damn thing. It also had a leak due to a gap in the seal of the right back passenger door and water had collected on that side of the car and rust had started to spread under the floor carpet, door threshold´and exacerbated the already existing rust issues on the edge of the door.

In the end the repair costs would've been higher than the value of the car at which point it was better to just junk it.

Sad though, I loved that car and the trim chip that not only gave the car an extra 60HP but also added a self-learning algorithm to the automatic transmission controller (ie. it changed between 255 programs depending on how I drove, how much I accelerated and braked) etc. was just amazingly smooth. I think that's also the reason why it failed; the best part of that system was that when I pushed the pedal to the floor it would be a constant acceleration without the slightest jolt when it changed gears, it was just soooo smooth and the back was gently pressed back into the chair until I reached the speed I wanted. I guess that put some serious strain on some parts in the stock automatic transmission which led to a total failure. The car was second hand when I bought it and it was produced in 1999 and I bought it in like 2010-2012 so it was already pretty old.

While it was a standard combi family car and chipped from ~140 BHP to ~200 BHP (which compared to more powerful cars wasn't that much) the car was quite light and it was as fast as the fastest car I had ever owned (a Citroen XM V6 3-litre engine, the exclusive model with soft real skin chairs that felt like sitting in the most comfy recliner ever.. but it would drink 3+ litre of petrol/10km when I put the pedal to the metal, it was insanely thirsty, esp. when driving over 240km/h which I rarely did since we don't have autobahn in Sweden and speeding tickets + losing my license would be ridiculously expensive and annoying... The shape of the car which was somewhat heavy had a very low profile while also having low wind resistance, allowing it to basically max out (I never found out it's max since I only dared go to 245 km/h, then I lost my nerve) 5th gear while gulping petrol as if it was a cold beer in a hot desert.

The hydraulic suspension on that model was a dream. I could switch between a comfy setting and a sport setting (making the suspension more rigid giving you more feedback and control when you drove fast) where the comfy setting made it possible to drive over speed breakers without slowing down since each wheel had it's own whatever-it's-called.. barely noticed a thing. Obviously it wouldn't been quite as nice if I drove faster than the speed limit but when I drive in a populated area where speed bumps are used I always follow the speed limits.

But that car rusted so bad... on the outside it mainly only noticeable as bubbles under the paint on the classic places; sills, arches, front of the hood, around window seals etc.) but the worst part was the undercarriage where the most important load bearing beams were damaged from rust with some needing total replacements... and even the engine mounts and other important parts had rust damage. I loved the 3-4 french cars I had but they were all shit when it came to rust.

Being a Swede I still haven't owned a Volvo or SAAB yet. Oh well.

VonMisk, I feel your pain and annoyance. It's very difficult to know if you're buying a lemon or not when buying second hand cars. You usually find out afterwards even if you have some experience with checking the normal things.
