I am reaching out to my fellow humpians for some help here
I've been out of the PC speaker loop for so long I don't know what brands, or models are good anymore.
For the last 4-5 years I have been using studio monitors and a ASIO steinberg USB dac for my PC speakers. Works GREAT for me, and when I decide to fart around playing with making music.
But the heat they produce and standby wattage is starting to annoy me as I just always leave them on because it's a PITA to reach around both to turn them off. Plus the need for two more wall plugs, one for each, and the extra XLR cables are annoying when I redo my desk cables.
Long story already too long...anyone got any recommendations for decent PC speakers?
Not the overly bassy or treble heavy ones 'trying' to sound expensive. I have a bose set like that now someone gave me I ended using in the kitchen. They get loud, but its like being slapped and glass shoved in your ears at the same time from the overly eq'd bass and treble they have.
It sounds like the bose engineer decided: yes THIS is how people like to hear music while adjusting the EQ profile:
Spoiler: | |
I don't need loud, or tonally flat, or surround sound. Just need a good 2.1 setup that sounds pleasant and reasonably true. Something under $200-$250 max range.

For that budget, get something from edifier, they have pretty good 2.1 sets for low price.

inb4 KC portia whatever koss recomendation.
And spykeZ's following omegaLUL
From my end, bought some Edifier 1280T a few years back and they're still awesome. Slightly bigger than your regular pc speakers, but pack one hell of a punch
I'd recommend them, even if they're 2.0 the bass is still pretty decent.

I'll check them out. I didn't even know they made a PC speaker setup.

Are you looking for passive speakers or active.
200-250 I would say would get you just a nice set of speakers. Adding in a subwoofer to that, you're going to get some hot garbage speakers.
Edifier is my absolute go to brand for people wanting something decent for cheap, but even theirs with a subwoofer is 300. There's a few members on here I started out on Edifier including Toni up above. They're priced right and punch above their belt.
https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-Bookshelf-Subwoofer-Bluetooth-Wireless/dp/B077Y6PHKQ
However, all of their speakers are active. I think a couple started coming with remotes but from what i've used, they don't work very well when they do work.
If you wanna hit my up on steam, we can talk speakers all night till we find something.

You'll have a MUCH easier time getting into something going good if you go passive and have a speaker amp or something laying around, or can get a good enough class D one.

Thanks for the input spykez!
Active if possible. Only reason I am switching from what I have is the hassle of the cords and plugs. 2 XLR and 2 power plugs for 2 speakers is messy not to mention 2 studio speakers take up room. Wanting to go back to the simple "one headphone jack, and one power cord" PC speakers layout. And the heat they put off all the time isnt 'bad' but can tell with 2 monitors, a PC on my desk, and 2 self powered studio monitors this corner of my office is warmer. The heat sink on the back of each is always pretty warm to the touch.
I got some decent amps and some klipsch now I could use, but I'd be in the same boat, a little too big of speakers and a seperate box for control. (Monitors are internal amp in each but I use a steinberg ci2 for control and volume)
Thinking of these after everyone suggesting edifier:
https://www.edifier.com/us/en/speakers/s330d-2.1-gaming-speakers-subwoofer
The pod control is nice, from what I can find they sound relatively clear and not overly heavy on either end. I dont need super high end on my PC. I got a setup in garage, and living room for everything else if I want music. I'm trying to avoid the bose/logitech end of things where bass is too heavy and sounds muddy and highs are peaked so hard at 10-14k they are overly tinny.

I just used presonus e3.5 for last 2 years and they were fantastic. TBH sounded exactly the same from fiio e10k output and my onboard.

Thats what I have now, almost. I got a pair of Presonus e5.
Sound good and great for dicking around making music I will never finish. But like i said too big to be desktop speakers really, too much heat, and 5 big cords for 2 speakers (2 power plugs, two XLR, and USB for the ci2).
each one needs a power and a XLR itself:
Spoiler: | |
Still stalling on pulling the trigger on the Edifier. Debating between the one I linked, and the $300 one everyone recommended.

Audioengine A2+ is on my wishlist, but for the moment the Edifier I bought in 2012 are still good.

Those A2+ are fucking hilarious. I walked into a store once and they were playing and was like damn, this sounds good, asked what speakers they were, and showed me these little mini assholes and I'm like, in what fucking world are these little bastards playing that music? How does that even work.

Just be aware, they're small, so manage your expectations, you're not going to be getting satisfying bass, you can always pair a sub to them though, and please make sure you have them setup right so you get the best out of them. Tweeters ear level pointing at you or get some angled lifts that point them up at your ears.

Isn't that everything, You want a reputable brand and not a cheap one? At least for that that applies to anything I buy.

carefull with subwoofers if u value ur neigthbours mental state and ur safety |
I mean, this is Audioengine, not Logitech. Yuge difference here.
One employs audio engineers, the other doesn't.
Audioengine is a pretty damn reputable brand.

Thanks for the heads up, I needed a small pair really so I'm sure these will do the job. I can put them with a woofer if needed, but I'll try them on their own first.
I recently bought a Dali Catch portable speaker which blew my mind at how good it was, so I thought it was time to upgrade my 15 year old logic 2.1 set up 😵

If you want an affordable sub that sounds really damn good but not overpowering, check out the polk PSW111
I use it in my office and sounds damn good.
Unless you look at the audioengine subwoofer or Kanto sub.
