|
 |
Just overall bored with the genres i usually enjoy. Then i started thinking about Adventure games, specifically Maniac Mansion and how much i loved that game as a kid, for some reason.
I googled. I found this Steam review:
"Maniac Mansion is unlike almost any other adventure game (except for Zak McKracken). The reason is that the NPCs in the game are alive. They have their own goals (get food, get mail, check out suspicious events), they can catch you, you can die or lose important items. Actions have real consequences, and there's even choice and different endings."
This must have been one of the reasons that game stood out for me since i love that stuff to this day. Are there any other adventure games (modern or retro) with NPC's that actually feels a bit alive, where there's a really good sense of PLACE (if you've played such a game you know exactly what i'm talking about)?
It's a genre i have not paid much attention to in probably 30 years (because RPG's happened). I'm looking for something lighthearted, feel-good, old school vibes, preferably not set in 2020 (/+) and yes, with close to simulator like qualities for NPC's.

The pure adventure genre sadly hasn't really evolved when it comes to complex routines or dynamic events, if anything, it's devolved to more linear movie-like and/or less complex walking-sim-like experiences. There are still quite a few great titles being released on a yearly basis that succeed in re-proposing the good ol' static point&click formula, there are quality puzzle hybrids as well, without mentioning the outstanding Disco Elysium which successfully merges role-playing and adventure, but not quite much that manages to provide reactive simulator-like qualities. Even most RPGs these days fail to acknowledge AI routines and NPCs that properly react to the world surrounding them, with rare (and a bit flawed) exceptions such as Kingdom Come, Mount and Blade, and Bethesda's games to a degree.
Still, if you've been away from the adventure genre for decades and fancy immersive 100% old-school titles you must obligatorily check the stuff from Amanita and Wadjet Eye, without forgetting Deadalic as Couleur mentioned and The Brotherhood as well. Games like Machinarium, Primordia, Samorost 3, Gemini Rue, Stasis and so on, there's a lot of enjoyment to be had.

Have you played Lucasarts The Dig?
One of my favourite adventure games of all time. Replayed this 2 or 3 times.

Yeah, Amanita stuff seems pretty unique. Not sure it's exactly what i'm after though.
It's too bad the genre has stayed so stale, like so much else. I'm asking here because it's not an easy thing to google, not even sure if a dev puts in the time it'll be talked about that much.
I think there are many missed opportunities for the genre, especially for more of an organic experience where at least some randomness occurs which would make the story feel more personal. RPG's did evolve here (bit of a mixed result).
@Grale: yes, that's actually the last adventure game i played when i think of it.

Try Spiritfarer - https://store.steampowered.com/app/972660/Spiritfarer/
It's some kind a basic "zoo management" adventure game with crafting and exploration. Great adventure with unique and interesting characters (each of them is based on real life people known to the devs). Graphics are really nice, the story is touching, secret areas, decent crafting system.
Loved that game exactly for the characters. There is some grinding for resources as you need them to upgrade your boat but it's not too annoying. But all in all this is one of the best hidden gem games for this year.

Oxenfree - Was given for free on gog some years ago and just out of boredom played it. It ended being quite the experience! Recommended.
Yesterday - Got it from a bundle. If not a bit slow at the beginning, intriguing story with a sense of loneliness. Not your NPC-fest of sorts, true, but worth it.
Sam & Max - I'm sure you've tried those, but damn if they're not worth it!
And as Ixigia said, Samorost 2 & 3 and Machinarium, even Creaks (their latest) are wonders of art. Must try!

Regardless what you say, the recommendation i gave is still valid! Break out of your shell and dont be fixated on something so very unusual. It'll just lead to you not playing anything.
