The six-part miniseries promises to take viewers to the blood-drenched Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, in which Germanic warriors halted the northward advance of the Roman Empire in A.D. 9.
Torn between the mighty empire that raised him and his own tribal people, a Roman officer's conflicted allegiances lead to an epic historical clash.
makes sense, it's a barbaric language. i mean sound wise I think they're referred to as Germanic, though it does not mean German, but perhaps the language was similar to that more than latin, dunno.
At least it's better than barbarians with a Texas accent.
So the romans are speaking in old latin, but the barbarians in modern german? wtf
Id rather have it that way than english dialects. I hated the ones in Enemy At The Gates. So stupid to use english when there are actors who can speak those languages.
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.
6 eps of a little over 30 mins.
It focuses mostly on non-historical characters and events, it's loosely connected to Totenburg, until the battle itself.
It focuses on a group of friends, an a classic love triangle.
Acting-wise, while unequal, it's pretty solid, just like the direction and filming. Competent would be the word.
It goes a bit Euro Cheapo on the CGI edits, but nothing revolting.
Overal decent, and for a ~3h30 movie, it doesn't overstate it's welcome.
I was expecting something more, and it didn't deliver on that.
The language thing didn't bother me at all.
Quite forgettable.
6/10

What @HubU said. Don't expect something like Rome, it's nothing like that. Good production values, good cast and fun to watch. I'd say 7/10 after four eps.
I wish I could turn off the subtitles just for the Romans. It's been quite enjoyable dragging my somewhat rusty classical Latin skills out to translate without subs.
Quite impressive that the Romans all speak with classical Latin pronunciation rather than the more "modern" ecclesiastical/church Latin.

Is there new latin?
Church/Ecclesiastical Latin has quite different pronunciations. 'V's are pronounced as Vees for example. Whereas classical Latin doesn't have the V sound.
this was cheesy and silly from start to finish, 0 immersion, if you want to know what romans really thought about that stupid eagle watch Rome tv series, best roman stuff there is.

As much as I do love Rome, I, Claudius is better for the historical era.
You can't beat Brian Blessed hamming it up as he yells for Varus to bring back his legions.
seriously u have half your cast waste all their brainpower on dead old latin (that nobody really knows how it was spoken in the first place) in stead of using that brain capacity to put into their acting ... thats a load of bullshit and only a fancypants schmuck can come up with such an idea
the series rome showed us it perfectly works to have romans speak english to suit the civilized narrative ... bloody wankers
yes i "studied" (memorized) 'latin' in school and hated that shit with a passion, fucking fancypants bullshit
I wish I could remember even 10% of all the mandatory Latin classes from school, it truly feels like wasted time since my brain just silently went ahead and tabula rasa'd everything over the years. I could have learned proper English instead, or anything else really
could have learned spanish or chineze , a whole new continent that opens up to u instead of digging in dead roman vile history of corruption and treachery, beaten by simple barbaric nomads from the east
but its soo fancypants and for the smart kids ... i spit on latin bah!
acting was decent, the script was half assed, the sets and props were nice, the combat scenes sucked ass, nothing memorable sadly, failed opportunity to turn it into something memorable like gladiators opening scene, yes a high bar, but the bar was set there and well, cant just ignore it exists, they tried, could have had a better shot with better writing,
but what to expect when u handcuff ur writers and actors to shit they need to translate into some dead language zzzz, germans speaking german was nice, the latin , totally unncecesary
