So yeah, been very moody and tired for the last couple of months. Every time I ate something with sugar in it, I kept losing consciousness-ish, kind of. Like when you fall asleep and wake up again right away.

Last week I had 18 (whatever), normal is 3-5. Now I am on meds and I avoid sugar (max 25grams a day, 250 grams of carbs) and got some medication and damn, I am back baby!

Energy all day long, no more sleepy, way less moody... and today sugar was down to 9.

Realized, that I had all the symptoms for about 8 years... yeah, but back then I lost a lot of weight and avoided sugar without knowing I had anything, so the Diabetes kind of "gone away" until now, since the arrival of my stepson, who lives here now with us and suddenly we have shit loads more of sugary food in the house and well...

It is what it is.

But sure feeling better now, that I can control it.

JFYI Smile

Sorry to hear, take care! This is a good time to change the lifestyle to something healthier, maybe?

Oh absolutely. I am embracing it. No more snacking between meals, counting sugar content etc.

It's the kick the ass I needed!

Welcome to the club. You actually SHOULD snack between meals (3 meals/day + something inbetween) where you take a healthier snack between breakfast and lunch and then a healthy snack between lunch and dinner). That is the recommended routine. Obviously no coke or pepsi (go zero/max if you have that kind of "addiction"). I you go super-healthy you'll get bored and burn out in months and fall back into bad habits. And move your body more. And now you're also in one of the corona risk groups.

White bread, pasta, rice etc, stuff that is almost entirely carbs = nope unless it's just once now and then. You can of course have a piece of cake/something sweet every now and then. Type 2 is after all not the same as type 1 where you risk severe hypo/hyperglycemia that could lead to ketoacidosis, put you in a lethal coma etc. (depending on your particular status of course, your doctor should send you to a diet specialist if you haven't got an appointment already).

I guess you're on tablets? Talk to your doc about Victoza (injection pen) as an additional treatment. Expensive as fuck (but manageable with a good health care system). It affects/lessens hunger, makes the digestive system work slower (and thus take up sugar slower) as well as make your pancreas produce more insulin.

Just stay away from sugar-exploding soda's. I can't drink that stuff anymore, it's waaaaay too sweet and disgusting.

OH man sorry to hear it Sad
Getting old sucks, not being able to eat pizza and wash it down with 1 liter of coke for dinner every night like when you was 20 sucks..
Keep it in check man. You dont want to go the route of mandatory daily shots to keep it level.

If you drink soda/soft drinks cut them out. They, at least for my father, was like 75% of his issue. Diet drinks taste like shit to start if you have to have your craving. But I hear you get use to it.

I've been meaning to get checked myself. Last 6 months or so headaches nearly ever day, random periods of foggy headed (like when you stand up too quick, but without the physical coordination loss), weird hard to describe 'pressure feeling' in my head, and tired/sleepy a lot more.

If its only type 2 try to keep it in check so its doesn't turn into type 1. type 2 you can 'reverse' to some degree or at least manage. Type 1 is the 'this fucking sucks" type.

You can indeed get used to diet drinks (and enjoy it just as much as you once loved normal) and after a while the normal sugary stuff is sickly sweet and not that pleasant. Pepsi Max is easier to move to than Coke Zero, at least for me. Sprite Zero is excellent.

Go for that checkup man, better safe than sorry and being early if there exists an issue is always better. I hope it's nothing serious mate.

Cheers Frant!

I have no issue drinking sparkling water, I like that actually. And every now and then a coke zero, which I like, too.

And you can actually eat pizza, it all depends on the sugar count. The Grocer here has a 500g pizza (2 portions) which only contains only 4g/portion and a manageable amount of carbs.

Btw. you can eat up to 250g of carbs/day, that's half your daily calory intake, so quite a lot.

And ofc. I snack between main meals, but usually less and a lot healthier Smile E.g. no more sugar loaden bake goods or yogurts.

Now it's e.g. a self-made yogurt with low-fat natural yogurt, mixed with e.g. oatmeal and unsweetened almond milk and some artificial sweetener. A delight and almost sugar-free.

I also made myself some homemade no added sugar-free jam, using e.g. raspberries and gelatine and some sweetener (just a bit). 7g sugar/100g instead of like 50g/100 in normal jam Smile

Also found lactose free milk with reduced sugar content, i.e. 3g/100ml instead of the normal 5g/100ml.

Instead of bread, I eat puffed rice pads.

It really adds up, lol Smile

Medication I have:

Metformin hydrochloride (Metfin 500mg)
Sulfonylurea (Glizazid-Mepha retard 60mg)

The only fruits I ate so far are strawberries and raspberries. They have only 5 resp.7g of sugar per 100g.

But yeah, can't eat much of that hehe.

Never was a big "raw fruit eater" anyway. But I sure miss my yogurts, lol.

IIRC, apples, strawberries and peaches are the worst offenders.

Everything else is so-so, sugar (fructose, in this case I think?) wise.

Citron 2.5g
Blackberry 4.9g
Strawberries 4.9g
Raspberries 7g
Peach 8g
Oranges 9g
Apples 10g
Banana 12g

per 100g.

Problem is, 100g ain't much at all Smile It's like 4 normal sized Strawberries or 1 medium-sized apple.

And that for a max of 25g/day

My wife measures sugar levels 3 times per day and we found out eating slow sugars like full grain rice, pasta and bread is better overall because sugar levels rise slower and keep you satied for longer. It also enables you to eat more in one meal and less afterwards if you really want to eat sometimes. Its also better for sports etc. because it keeps the energy levels up longer.

Diet stuff with artificial sugar should be avoided. It makes your body still crave that sweet taste and sugar in all other kinds of meals and so it doesn't really help. Nothing against the occasional diet coke, but overall learning to avoid all kinds of sodas is the way to go. (imo) The drinks with carbs, when I have them, is the occasional beer with the buddies. or the glass of wine etc. Sodas just fuck up the sense of taste. They don't go with anything you can eat. Well except, tonic water goes well with gin, I suppose. But to each their own.

Getting off sugar is just a matter of training.

But ask Pumpy, I know he's got some nice low-carb recipes. (Dat tuna pizza)

Damn I would suffer a lot without sugar, I could't imagine going without sweets and especially chocolate. After 24 hours without I get the craving and it tends to get unbearable. I never in my life went longer than 2 days without chocolate.

At least you can get Metformin now, it's supposed to be a promising anti-aging drug and many rich people who want to live longer take it. But you can only get it via prescription and if you have diabetes.
It's a good diabetes drug too so if you don't take it already I'd ask the doc to give you a prescription.

edit: ah I see you got it already Wink

Way back when I visited the diet-specialist I was told that people with any form of Diabetes should eat what everyone ought to eat: normal food in the right amounts at the same time every day. With normal healthy food I'm talking about food that isn't stuffed with refined sugar, salt, crappy fats and artificial flavoring etc., and try to eat some kind of vegetable (preferably one with less sugar and more antioxidants) with the meal.

Ya I wrecked my stomach in youth with shit food, drinking and smoking, been taking PPI's and Zantac for the last 5-6 years now as of this year there are strong lawsuits across all medications causing cancer and kidney failure (ofc big pharma knew and sold it anyway). So now im trying natural remedies that have had some success in studies, started only eating eating whole foods, veg, I gave up meat a year ago because the industry is abhorrent..

So counting 5x death sentences now, smoking, zantac, ppi's, working with roundup and asbestos..

Fully agree suger in food is bullshit and jammed into everything, honestly if it's processed in any way just don't eat it.

What about cooking? You can control everything you eat if you prepare it yourself.

That's basically to what it boils down... prepare everything yourself.

Processed food is garbage, even for healthy people. It's just a convenience thing.

The biggest culprits in processed foods are high glucose syrup and insane amounts of salt and sugar and trans fats.

And always the cheapest possible ingredients to make the most profit.

Maybe you were lucky, unchecked diabetes can lead to losing a finger or toes, a foot even half a limb. It's a not as harmless as people think.
