Could not find a topic about this show already.
Sorry but not template yet, feel free to make one if someone has the time.

Was just wondering if anybody has seen the Pilot episode last night.
And if anybody has seen a release already?

Yeah, it's a remake - or possible a reboot. I'm still waiting on a release too, I ADORED the original mini-series .. I'd love to see a new one.

==WARNING! THIS POST CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS==

Gah... I'm not really sure on how to view this episode, to be honest. It was fun, I *think* I enjoyed it, but something felt a little off. For one; don't listen to ABC, it's a reMAKE not a reBOOT -- there are far too many parallels between the 1980s version and this one, too many "same old, same old" touches. Characters are roughly the same, events happen the same way, a boy falls in love with the V ideal and joins the "Ambassador Program", they even managed to throw in the "spray-paint V symbol on the wall" scene --- hell, there's even a V sympathiser revealed in the first episode. Everything just feels like "This is the 2009 version of a 1983 TV show. Same shit, different technology"

Secondly, it's fast. Uncomfortably fast. The original show worked its magic masterfully, easing you into the plot so nicely that you honestly believed, for a time, that the Vs were friendly and that they were coming to help. Sure something felt off about them, something nagged at the back of your mind about their supposed good intentions, but on the whole - you felt like you could believe them, if you wanted to. No such luck here. Within the first 35 minutes, it was a slaughter. The Vs attacked a group of resistance fighters (Yes, that's right. There's a resistance movement within the first 30mins of the show. Earlier actually, if you can read between the lines) and decimated them ... revealing, in the process, several supposed "plot twist" elements and characters. Wait, seriously? Come on ABC, I know it's a fucking pilot - but don't give away ALL the goddamn secrets in the first episode!

All in all, it was enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing how ABC is going to extend a 469min mini-series premise into a continuing show, possibly spread over multiple years/seasons, especially as they've completely exposed the Vs as enemies of mankind within the first EPISODE. A fun show, a decent reboot (nothing hammy or completely disbelievable, a credible performance given by a largely-unknown cast) and some interesting ideas ... but ultimately could prove disastrous as the writers are throwing everything and anything at you right from the start, leaving little to the imagination. I'm going to have watch a good few more episodes before I finally make up my mind and offer judgement..

... oh and continuity; Anna (the Supreme Commander of the Vs, think of her as the Diana of the original, though far cuter - in a spaced-out crack addict kind of way) initially made mention of needing resources in return for technological information and help, specifically; water. So if their species is in such need of water, why does she later stress, in an interview, that her home planet is a "gorgeous paradise with beautiful cities and large oceans"? Oceans of what? Lava? Rolling Eyes

Diana. V (1983-1984)

Anna. V (2009-????)

Code:
The story became a Nazi allegory, right down to the Swastika-like emblem used by the Visitors and their SS-like uniforms. There is a youth auxiliary movement called the "Friends of the Visitors" with obvious similarities to the Hitler Youth, and Visitor broadcasts mimic Nazi-era propaganda. The show's portrayal of human interaction with the Visitors bears a striking resemblance to stories from Occupied Europe during World War II with some citizens choosing collaboration and others choosing to join underground resistance movements.

Where the Nazis persecuted primarily Jews, the Visitors were likewise depicted to persecute scientists, their families, and anyone associating with them. They also distribute propaganda in an effort to hide their true identity. Some of the main characters in the initial series were from a Jewish family and the grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, frequently commented on the events of the past again unfolding. Once they are in a position to do so, the Visitors later declare martial law to control the scientists (and resistance fighters) as well.

This. BSG rules and I think I might actually prefer it to the original ... it's bleaker and darker, which is more appealing.
