Nifty Minidrive - Came out too late after I backed it, no longer fit my Macbook

OUYA - Came out too late after I backed it, underpowered piece of crap

Star Command - PC version still not out, iOS version lackluster

Doublefine game - Running out of cash, too ambitious

Shadowrun Returns - Features cut, delayed

The Banner Saga - Meh

The Dead Linger - Meh

Luckily there's been some success stories;

FTL, Giana Sisters, Skullgirls, Leisure Suit Larry, Akaneiro, Strike Suit Zero, Organ Trail, Cthulhu Saves the World to name a few. I *think* there's quite a few more that are out right now but I haven't checked on them all. Oh and not to mention Oculus Smile

I think most people who donate KNOW that these risks come with the territory, if you want guarantees, avoid Kickstarter. I know I won't.

I love Kickstarter too and if I still had any form of income I'd have backed half a dozen projects this year alone, all great sounding games that I'd be happy to get. Still, it's not exactly doing the KS movement any favours with so many issues lately - specifically the ones around "shooting too high" :\

So far I only backed something that showed some working gameplay - Grim Dawn and Xenonauts (although I know Xeno will be probably mediocre) and Wasteland 2 because I love Wasteland.
And I almost always back at the lowest tier that will give me access to the full product.

Failures are to be excepted. The concept of kickstarer is great but you have to use common sense here too. That should apply to the dev teams too, especially when they take rewards into considerations.
There are some examples for overdoing it, like Banner Saga guys when 1/3 of the kickstarter money had to be spend on t-shirts, posters and postage.

Yeah. They ran a Kickstarter for the iOS/Android version first, then a while later ran ANOTHER Kickstarter for the PC version. It still took 18 months to release the game and while I wouldn't call it "terrible"; I certainly wouldn't call it good either. Too shallow, not even half what they promised/offered in the Kickstarter. The Android version still isn't out and they're not working on the PC version until after Android is released Laughing

Kickstarter is awesome, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the site or the ideal, it's just that some developers simply reach too high Neutral As VonMisk also rightly said; sometimes developers are crippling themselves trying to honour, frankly insane, physical pledge tiers. If a thousand people all pledge for t-shirts and boxed copies, that's going to end up costing the developers ludicrously chunky amounts of dev money that should go towards the game and the staff making it.

Thus far I've only backed "Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded" and Obsidian's "Project Eternity".

While I wasn't disappointed with the end result of Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded, I do feel that the added "features" were in no way justified by the insane amount of money they asked for them.

As for Project Eternity, still too far out to tell. In the end, it will be this game that determines whether anything else gets backed in the future - not touching anything on KS until then.

Ouch. That's not the first relatively high-earning KS to fail and I'm downright certain it won't be the last, but it still doesn't change the "ouch" feel Neutral

Actually there are several good projects that have been released already Razz (Shadowrun Returns, Magrunner: Dark pulse, Chivalry medieval warfare, Expeditions: Conquistador, Sword and Stars: The Pit plus the ones mentioned by Sabin)..but yeah, the "biggest" and most hyped ones are still very work in progress. Next year should be a good year. Smile

Grim Dawn and Wasteland 2 are due out in a couple months, so that's two more huge projects I'm looking forward to. HD re-release of the Megadrive indie RPG "Pier Solar" is coming in December too.

Grim Dawn will definitely be postponed. They still have to release a beta version. And Wasteland 2 was already postponed to later date.

Wasteland 2 was postponed six weeks, there's still every chance it will be out by December. Grim Dawn has released its beta months ago - we've all played and finished it already Razz - plus the fact that it has been in development for several years prior to KS.

In case of Grim Dawn it was alpha. They still have to release beta.
