|
 |
I just finished my first game and I'm currently in review at Oculus and at Steam.
My store page on Steam has already been approved but I still have one issue:
I only have a Rift S and I'm using Oculus Integration. It's suppose to support OpenVR which is used on Steam but I want to make sure that the Steam build can be used without the Oculus installed and that the controls are translated correctly.
Let me know if you have either headset and you are willing to give the game a try.
Store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1249730/Spacewalk_Defender/
(PM me your email so I can invite you as a tester or send you a key, or however this works on steam at this stage of publishing)
Thank you!

In all honesty, that looks daft... on the level of asset flipper kind of daft.
But that is to be expected when everyone and their dog makes VR games these days I guess.
I mean, guns pew pewing spaceships... It would have been more interesting as if you were controlling a turret. B24 gunner (ball turret) like but in spaaaaaaaaace. And maybe have the spaceships move less linear. Aka... put a bit more effort into it.

1MA and first game - what did you expect? Arizona Sunshine VR?
He is probably just building portfolio so he can later land a position in some VR dev studio since he has something to show and prove he has experience.

I get you, I totally do. Thank you for your feedback.
But Civ is right, I am a 1MA and developing in full time along my full time day job, which means I'm currently working more than 400 hrs/month. I'm starting to get burned out and just want to have the first version published to which I'll follow up with several feature updates and improvements that I have planed.
It may be wrong when it comes to games, but when I have learned something over the years it's that it's better to get the foot into the door, aka, gauge the potential client base, before wasting time to perfect something when nobody wants it in the end.
dethy, I'll send you a PM, most likely during next week. Steam just responded and it failed on their headsets. I guess I won't get around ordering a Vive to properly implement the support. But since you offered to help out, I'll make sure you get access for testing and a proper key thereafter. Thank you!

Good luck with your project! Since this is a passion project, remember to have fun as well.
We used to be more accepting of such projects in the past, but with so many developers abusing our trust, cynicism has crept up.

@Foobyte nice one and ignore the derps, i'd imagine there is nothing to lose $100? releasing something on Steam. At the very least you get all the experience from dev -> release, the statistics and feedback etc. Well done. I cant test this at the moment as stretched but hopefully one or two users here can help you out and give you some feedback etc.
Might want to ask some specific questions ur unsure about you want ppl to provide 2c on.
@Morphineus bit harsh, I'm sure this game would crush half your 3K+ steam library.

A bit more than that. The listing fee on Steam is 100 USD by itself. I also have the licensed Unity version which runs about 500 € / year, in addition to different hardware that I had to purchase to optimize the performance for Oculus' minimum requirements, etc.
In the end, yeah it's mostly about the experience from development to publishing. I wouldn't have expected that the store requirements, on Steam as well as Oculus, are as high as they are. I'm used to developing apps and just pushing them into the Android store no questions asked.
Oculus requires games to run a solid 90 FPS on a GTX 970 or R9 290, which was quite the challenge by itself. I did pass technicial review now and they are reviewing gameplay/value as well as store assets next.
@Waargh:
I'm fully commited to add more features as long as a few sales come in that at least pay for the time I invest. Turrets were on my list, as well as other things such as shields, power ups and something I don't want to mention yet but the idea about manually having to "fix" a turret when it jams is a nice touch and I'll consider to add such features. Thanks for the suggestions!
You could basically see this as an early access title. But instead I rather release it as is and provide free feature updates as I see fit.

Was that supposed to hurt or something? Because I couldn't give a rats ass what you think of half my Steam Library. Hell, I even find most of it trash or mediocre.
Anywho, I rather be blunt than sugarcoat it. I'd say the same if he wasn't a member, isn't that more valuable? Also, he's going to ask money for it. i'm sure with your posts in mind: its up to standards for you to buy it, no?
Probably would have been nicer about it if I knew upfront its just to get experience and it being more of a demo.
But yeah, I'm a bit of a cunt. I'll give you that.

Seems to happen from time to time. Usually right before a perm ban if I push hard enough. But I have my peace of mind script, so I won't bother.

This is your main mistake. The market is overloaded with those 'as is' releases, most of them never get updated. In short - you've missed that early train where every basic tech demo crap would still be intersting. Today you have to provide more on start.
Take your time, invest into clever mechaniscs and ideas and release something fun even if ugly.
Going the way you've descirbed is imminent failure.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

I have fixed all requirements on Steam and passed the reviews on Oculus.
The official release date is set for
03/02/2020 on Steam
02/27/2020 on Oculus
I have also reduced the pricing from $14.99 to $9.99 as per Oculus' suggestion. I believe this is fair based on the content the game provides. More development of additional features/content has already begun.
I hope that there are a few people out there who find this game enjoyable and that it allows me to continue working on it. And perhaps, that in the long run, I can move on to other bigger game ideas that I have. But you gotta start somewhere, right?
