point is, you dont need to remake it. create a new story if you REALLY have to make another film.

Quote: | Butler Withdraws From 'Escape From New York' Remake
Scottish actor Gerard Butler has pulled out of upcoming remake Escape From New York due to "creative differences." Butler's casting in the update caused controversy earlier this year when Kurt Russell, the star of director John Carpenter's original 1981 movie, demanded an American, not a Scot, take on the role of Snake Plissken. Speaking earlier this year, Russell said, "When I was told, my initial reaction was, 'Oh man.' I do think that character was quintessentially one thing - and that's American." |

Quote: | Gerard Butler Is No Snake Plissken
Yesterday we found out the joyous news that the remake of Escape from New York would not be handled by hack director Brent Ratner. Fans cheered for the future of the needless remake and a few tears might have even been shed out of joy. Today, another name is departing the picture, although the news is less joyous.
The new Snake Plissken, Gerard Butler (300), has announced that he will no longer be involved with the remake. Understand, Butler was attached before there was a director or studio formally involved. Now the day after Ratner’s departure, Variety announces Butler is also leaving, due to “creative differences.”
My question is: differences over what? There is no director right now, so there’s really nobody to have differences with. I know “creative differences” is kind of a catch all excuse, but how about some honesty here. How about, “the script sucks” or, “remaking this picture is just a bad idea.” Give us some reason rather than a generic excuse.
Apparently New Line is responding to the loss of both director and star by having rewrites done, even on the eve of the possible start of the writer’s strike. Jonathan Mostow (U-571) has been brought in to do some script doctoring and possibly even take over directing the project. |

Escape from LA was a shitty enough "remake" for me for this movie. The original was a decent action movie, but i never really got, why everybody liked it so much. Even Schwarzenegger movies of that time were better...

'hack director'? then how is this an improvement?
there's not a single film by mostow i'd want to revisit, while ratner has several
none great and few even good, but none fuck-awful like u571 or t3
but i'm tired of all the remakes so any step back is good news

could somebody explain to me, why they want to remake it anyways? As i said above the original wasnt even a great movie AND got a remake with that escape from LA movie, which featured the original kurt russel and had about the same storyline and sucked more than a 2$ crack-whore. Is it really that hollywood has to thrash the last ounce of originality out of every semi-decent story that they can get the rights to? If that is the future of intellectual property than i m all for bombing the studies with a strategic nuclear strike...

Quote: | Charlie Hunnam ("Pacific Rim," "Sons of Anarchy"), Dan Stevens ("The Guest," "Downton Abbey") and Jon Bernthal ("The Wolf of Wall Street," "The Walking Dead") are the names rumored to be up for the role of Snake Plissken in the proposed "Escape From New York" remake at Silver Pictures and StudioCanal.
The report comes from Starlog which also says the new film will be less focused on one man and more an ensemble piece. It will, however, retain the central premise of the John Carpenter-directed original:
"[It's] more team-based, as Snake Plissken traverses through a treacherous New York landscape with a rogues gallery of criminals who look to leave the island-turned-prison in exchange for the rescue of the captured U.S. President."
They say earlier drafts of the the script had a team-dynamic to it, but subsequent re-writes have turned several of the supporting characters into co-leads. Some are familiar, some are new:
"Plissken’s team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President’s security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken’s former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.”
The site adds that Silver Pictures has already commissioned pre-production artwork from independent artists featuring Hunnam as the one-eyed antihero. No director is yet in place either.
|
So they made it a more team-based rather than focused on one man.
And also found the worst actors for the part.
