So a fan in my case starting making noise—even after cleaning it with soap and water Cool Face—so clearly the PC is dead and it's time to buy a new PC! Laughing

I am looking at the 3960X CPU, one of the motherboard with a built in 10gbE port, Dominator Platinum RGB (Rolling Eyes) 4x8 3200 C16.

Plant to keep the PSU, SSDs, GPU.

Would like to get advice on cooling solution for that monster, and since I am not DV2, I would appreciate feedback on any other component.

Thanks

Or perhaps "G.SKILL Flare X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14Q-32GFX" instead of that Corsair memory? Not familiar with G.Skill memory.

I would go with 2x16 instead of 4x8 as most motherboards are daisy instead of t-topo, haven't checked if any of the motherboards you're after is already that though. You can't really buy bad RAM anymore, just don't get Chinese Yang Pi Cheng brands and you should be OK. Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, G.Skill, all decent.

Ran into an issue where some Gigabyte mobos had compatibility problems with Kingston modules.

But that maybe is for Intel only.

I have some 3200 G.Skill ram in my (Intel) system, perfectly fine with it for more than a year.

Now, about cooling. If I were building a new system, I'd get some AIO watercooling unit just so whenever I'm messing around the case there'd be more room around the CPU area to move around, like maybe removing the GPU with that annoying tab release. Driving me nuts trying to fit my fingers around huge tower coolers.

We're speaking about quad-channel memory here.

That's what I used in my current PC (some Corsair, but not sure which model by now—whatever was the "best" ~4-5 years ago), but have to admit it wasn't as good as I was expecting. Space-wise, sure, but the cooling performance was OK but not much more.

Which would you recommend?

Considering I have never touched anything besides my own GPUs AIO (1080 TI Waterforce), my opinion is not really valid, but some sort of 240/280 unit if the case allows. My next one will likely be some Corsair/Cooler Master model, 'cause I'd get it free from work.

Read a lot about motherboards for the Threadripper so you don't get shafted on quad-channel performance. You want one where the RAM-slots are wired correctly. 4x8 or 4x16 DDR4 3200-3800 (depending on your use case). Perhaps you can run faster RAM but I don't know if the 3960X can take advantage of higher frequency RAM with higher latencies. I haven't read up on the new Threadripper memory controller.

You should try to snag 3600mhz CL16 kit, its the sweetspot price and performance for Zen 2. G.Skill has been the most reliable on every AMD system i have built, especially the older Samsung B-Die type memory (all G.skill 3200mhz CL14 are Samsung B-Die, Trident Z atleast), those kits also work 3600MHZ CL16 out of the box since they are binned kits. You might wanna check out the newer G.Skill Neo kits tho, they are good aswell.

Stay away from AIO´s in Threadripper build, only AIO that has actually correct size cold plate in the pump for massive Threadripper IHS is Enermax 240/360 TR4 (these have issue that the liquid inside is wrong, the whole unit starts to corrode), rest manufacturers uses typical consumer CPU IHS size in their design and these does not work as good, you are better going with Noctua NH-U14S TR4 (best performing air cooling for TRX40), i have personally used it in Threadripper builds, keeps them cool and quiet, there are massive sized TR4 air coolers like wraith ripper and Dark Rock Pro TR4, but they dont seem to perform well, might have to do something with the cold plate design, not really designed for threadripper IHS.

@Breezer_ I was looking at the https://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-workstation-server/nh-u14s-tr4-sp3 and have had good experience with Noctua in the past.

Its the best one currently for Threadripper, until Noctua releases their NH-D15 TR4, which prototype was shown last year.

Can't go wrong with it, I got a Noctua NH-D15 recently for my Ryzen 3900X and ran plenty stress test after OC'ing, this is pretty much as cool as it gets without liquid cooling.

I know, but are all motherboards t-topology for Threadripper? I don't know. You don't want daisy chain if you run 4 modules.

Would have taken 16/32 if there was a version with more PCIe lanes and quad-channel memory. That 3950X is such a waste. The other option is going the Intel route, which is cheaper, but feels dirty in the mouth. Still contemplating that one.

Any recommendations about cases? Important factor is to have dust filters on all intake areas, because I live in the desert, apparently.

Currently looking at Meshify S2. Sadly the only version they have locally here is the white one with the glass, which I don't particularly care for, but not a deal breaker. Won't be having LEDs, that's for sure. Laughing

Got a meshify S2 dark tint glass version, it's a great case with really good cable management and it does have dust filters in the front and on top. There are plenty places to put additional fans along with the 3 built-in ones. Don't know what the white one looks like, but dark tint glass looks really sexy. Either way it's a great case and the colour shouldn't change the decision.

I have the R5 now, and it's really good. Comparing it to the mess I had in previous builds, basically having to go in with the vacuum cleaner once a month to clean CPU and GPU coolers, it's a night and day. The Meshify appears to be a continuation of that, with even more breathing room.
