https://variety.com/2019/film/news/leonardo-dicaprio-akira-california-tax-credit-allocated-1203177829/
After 17 years in and out of development, filming for the live action adaptation of manga/anime Akira is finally given the green light.
It has been revealed today that the state of California will give a massive $18.5 million tax credit for the production to shoot there in 2019. Filming will start within 180 days (or they will lose their tax credit) and last for 71 days.
I have low expectations, but the producer-director names ain't bad. Let's see.

"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."

Taika can handle akira.
What has DiCaprio produced that was a passion project and not just for tax purposes?

Yay ! | Awwww come on, the casting controversies alone are gonna be worth it

At least you have a director that can do it some justice.

compared to the animated one this is bound to be terrible, just going on past remakes by american studios.

I don't think I've seen a single good live action movie based on a manga yet. The last one I watched was Battleship Yamato and it sucked donkey ass.

Oh, is that the one with the old man ending up with powers etc.? Haven't watched the anime (or read the manga) yet. It's in my mental backlog of anime.

Ghost in the Shell had issues but it wasn't complete disaster.
If they can do what that has been done with alita, it will be a lot better.

I liked Gantz https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1525835/
But yes American remakes are absolutely fucking terrible, even Cameron and Rodriguez couldn't do Alita justice.

Quote: | Thor 4 comes at a cost: Warner Bros.' long-gestating adaptation of Japanese manga Akira.
That project, which was penciled for a May 21, 2021, release and had Waititi testing actors in a worldwide search for talent, is being put on pause indefinitely as the two projects' production dates began to bump up against one another. Script development concerns caused Akira to push back its shooting start, and while some of those have been addressed, say sources, the dates were now too close for comfort.
Warners' next step for Akira is unclear. Several sources have said that the studio is keen on keeping Waititi involved for the long term and hopes to see him pick up Akira after Thor 4. |
