[*]Publisher: Spiral Up Games
[*]Genre: CRPG, Wuxia, Martial Arts
[*]Release date: 15.09.2023
[*]Story/Description:
Quote:

Wandering Sword is a Chinese martial-arts RPG where you play a young swordsman caught up in a feud and nearly dies. Escaping the event puts you on the path of pursuing the highest form of martial arts and exploring the pugilistic world to become the great hero you are always destined to be.

Open World with a Lively Map
A huge open world, including areas such as the Central Plains, Jiangnan, the Western Regions, Nanjiang, Tianshan Mountain, and more. The player can explore the prosperous towns, secret caves, forts and strongholds, and other unique scenic places.

Unique pixel style rendered in Unreal Engine
With Unreal Engine 4, a new pixel style is created in the game: it switches PixelArt games to a 3D environment, giving a new blend of retro pixels and 3D reality. The game not only harks back to the pixelated Wuxia games of the MS-DOS era, but also brings us modernized visual effects and a better game experience.

Choose the Combat Mode You Like
If you are a fan of strategy games, you can select the traditional turn-based combat mode and outmaneuver your enemies. If you want to take things into your own hands, you can select the real-time combat mode to have an exciting battle and defeat enemies through precise action inputs.

Hundreds of Martial Arts Moves and Supporting Meridians
All the powerful abilities and moves are yours to pick. You can equip different types of weapons and join various sects. Learning cultivation methods can earn you Meridian Points, and practicing both internally and externally makes you a true martial arts master.

Travel the World and Make Friends
Most NPCs in the game have a friendship system. You can increase a NPC’s affinity towards you by interacting with them via gift giving, sparring, talking, etc. You can also recruit them to your party and travel the world together. NPCs of different sects have different Jianghu abilities. When you have a good relationship with them, they will even give you their weapons and secret manuals to help you dominate the martial arts world and excel in all aspects.

Multiple Endings and Freedom of Taking Side Quests
The different choices the player makes in the game lead to different endings. Other than the main story, there are a great number of side quests for the player to explore, with hidden unexpected adventures.

Dynamic NPCs
Most NPCs in the game have their own behavioral AI. They will get themselves martial arts manuals and grow their power, weaving their own unique stories."

I have to say: this came out of nowhere and I'm glad I saw it exists. I've played only for a few hours right now, waiting for the latest patch, but it's fun.

Nah, Wuxia is more like chinese Dragon ball (even that is a bit of a push). Xianxia is the DBZ equivalent.

Nah, it's fine. Well I haven't played much, but in the few hours I have I did not see any errors.

And yeah, this is wuxia, not xianxia. First one is "god among men", second one is cultivation until you reach immortality and defy the heavens to become a god. Power levels are completely different.
Wuxia peak martial artist master might live a 150-200 years, in xianxia you get more at the start of your cultivation Smile

Short version: game good, play.

Longer one:
Well, finished it after 35 hours. I waited for patches since every one adds some qol improvement to the game (auto battles, battle speed, real time battles, world map, fast travel and so on, and they plan story addons)

It was an extremely enjoyable experience. Truly classic wuxia story, with twists, turns, betrayals and learning the shocking secret that ''righteous'' sects can be as corrupt and evil as the ''evil''ones.
Exacerbated by the fact MC is a heroic type, so others usually look at him and think "how tf can he be so pure/naive".

There's great sense of going from a novice who could barely whack a rat to an absolute powerhouse, capable of bringing down a mountain with a burp.
(Buy or gather as many cultivation methods as you can, there's no limit. Every point in a weapon technique gives you points in weapon mastery)

There are story npc's who follow you during some parts of the main story, and recruitable npc's who will hang around forever, unless they die during a side mission in an avoidable scripted event. Their existence gets ignored during main missions, but they have their own quests and there's even a late game sidequest which requires 6 of them to be in your party in order to get the best result.

Cons for me were:

Way to many scripted events which did not take my actual power into consideration. I stopped counting situations where I two-shotted the villain only for the cutscene showing me gasping for air or losing.

Saturday morning cartoon villains always escape and you can't do anything until the plot allows them to die. And a heroic mc who thinks giving them a stern talking-to will make them change their ways.

The grind is real. The most common ways to get stronger is by unblocking your meridians. Those need meridian points, which you get from rare pills and equally developing the rare new Cultivation methods (rewards for quests, defeating enemies and duels. True to the trope no one just sells them) with martial points/xp. Thankfully while you are a weak-ass scrub you get OP companions who didn't spend their youth shooting rats in the desert and therefore don't start with the base stats of a coma patient.

But despite that I played till my eyes hurt, something which doesn't happen all that often.
