I think it's because of the autocleaning feature (when banning spammers for instance) that leaves threads hanging in some sort of mystical Hump limbo. They're all still there, but for some arcane reason they're temporarily not visible until someone (anyone) goes through the posts/browser history and views the specific thread, which then makes it visible to everyone again.
