reason: last night with a huge bang my pc instantly turned off. first thought the psu blew up, but after opening the case i saw the cpu cooler ripped of on two of its push pins, they just flew out and rattling around the case. newer seen that before, although i ofc know those plastic push pins are kinda crappy at all. strange thing was it instantly turned off, no temp warning from the board or throtteling, just instant power off (i was midgame in mk11). cooler was an alpenfön sella i bought about 6 years ago. could order replacement pins from them but the fan itself is kinda worn after those years and within the next 12 months there will be a system upgrade for me and for anything more than my xeon without oc the sella isnt great
mounted the boxed cooler after figuring out the problem, man that thing is fucking loud. so i need a new one, without needing to buy a proper new one in 8-12 months. so far i was looking at the mugen 5 and the macho b
I've been using a HR-02 Macho Rev.A on a 3570K and now on my 1700X (with AM4 Kit) since 2012. And its both extremely quiet and cools well.
I dont know what they changed on the B. But I think its price/performance is hard to beat.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
the dark rock is too huge (and too expensive for its cooling and noise). its down to the macho or the mugen 5 pcgh edition (the normal mugen 5 rev b has only 1 fan with higher rpm, the pcgh edition offers two fans with lower rpm and lower noise and atleast on par cooling) now
Noctua NH-U12A
Them's some sturdy attachment points.
Can't complain about my Cooler Master Hyper 212X, still going great and sturdy but I'm sure there's newer stuff out that does the same at the same price (like the one you had linked).
before i order a 100 euro cooler i will build an own water cooling system
ordered the mugen 5 pcgh now, got it for ~48 euros. price is ok i think. the backplate design seems durable and its compatible to all intel and amd sockets and important towards my upcoming system upgrade: the design has no problems with ram installed in the first bank (isnt the case atm, but maybe the board i will choose in the future wants a dimm in the first slot towards the cpu socket). the dark rock is pretty good too, but has some compatibility issues. another plus for the mugen: it comes with a pretty decent cooling paste, have nothing left here. only 20 year old stuff (which still works fine, i applied it yesterday to the stock cooler). so im saving here another 5-6 euros
This is literary stupidest thing I will ever read today.
I have had my custom loop for well over a year now without any issues. With a proper setup and good drainage for maintenance.
Unless you talk about AIO.
I agree!
Water rules, just can't beat it's cooling properties, with very little noise to boot
It can be a pain, yup, but it is well worth it in end, believe me. AIO can't touch a custom loop, not even close Temps 'sustained' with a custom loop are way way better than anything, aka, the harder and hotter you push it, the better it cools, or holds
I had an AIO on this very system to begin with (Corsair H115i Platinum), and it cooled well for what it was, but it just couldn't sustain any decent temps at all. 80-90c on CPU, that, with my air cooler still on GPU, and it climbing into the 90's, no thanks!
Throw on the waterblocks, and here we have a different story. They both never have passed 50c on full load, even after hours of gaming, of course, both heavily clocked to the limit also
Been rather hot here in UK, so they are both doing well
i used to have a custom loop, did leak a few times but was bodged together. i did site the resevoir and pump at the bottom of the case since thats what seemed to leak most. nothing killed though.
got an corsair h80 aio now, works fine but my case is a bit of a wind tunnel, switching to a coolermaster case in a few days just need a few more 2.5 hds to swap out for my 3.5 ones.
the hot air through the radiator is bad for a custom or aio setup.
will probably buy another aio cooler soon since it works well enough for me.
The night is dark and the road is long. Come on dead men, return to your homes.
took 10 min to mount the thing, 32°c in idle with 400rpm. not bad. gonna check the temps in games now, i dont care about prime95 cause its just not even near to normal usage
edit: just fired up mk11, a game which rapes the cpu during load times. max was 53°C with 550rpm, whereas the boxed cooler hit 79°C (i dont have a comparision with the old sella, cause i never monitored the temps lately)
played a bit more, temp maxxed at 59°C. pretty decent for 4 core 8 threads at 3,7ghz non delided, non undervolted haswell. with max 550rpm the fans are not noticable (unless i pull the bob and put the case on my desk)
