Just googled that Smile
Never thought about doing something like that but it's actually a pretty sweet idea although I'm sure it's rather expensive and time consuming.
This might get onto my "things you'll some day want to do"
The other thing ony that list (up to now) is building some kind of projector-beamer table contraption thingie for pen & paper groups ;D

If you do that, make pictures - I'd like to see that.

Found a site that you can order one from, might be cheaper to build one yourself tho.

http://www.dreamauthentics.com/index_order.html

EDIT 1 : For the controls etc if you want to build your own..

http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade.htm

EDIT 2: Good Site with plans pictures etc.

it isn't that much work, actually...built an arcade cabinet together with a friend for a public PC at a dormitory. the actual woodworking is the smallest problem if you've got some equipment, talented ppl for a paintjob are always around too. the only real hassle is dismantling old fightsticks and fitting them together with extra buttons for adding credits etc. navigating in the MAME (or any other emu) menu is a hassle, but we just installed a kinda hidden woodplate so you can slide out the keyboard+mouse if needed

The best way to get a mame cab up and running is to buy an old clapped out jamma machine off a local arcade or ebay. Buy a jpac adapter from www.ultimarc.com, stick a pc in it and run ArcadeOS.

there is an easier way probably, and that is buy an old Jpm fruit machine case, they are convertable to a point. you wont get the overhang at the top unless u mod that urself though. but shit take u half a day if ur good with ur hands..

good tutorial - that's pretty much how we did it, just made the buttons/electronics ourselves instead of getting them from ultimarc

I built 2 of them a few years ago for friends and sold them. Wasn't bad at all. Of course I build mine with more "stability" than regular cabinets. I used 3/4" MDF all around, so the damn thing was heavy as hell after I was finished. Still nice though. The one fuzzy pic is a shot of the led i've got illuminating the trackball mouse..kinda hard to make out. I bought the buttons, joysticks, etc online..still have the parts to make a 3rd somewhere..I also put 2 wireless gamepads and put on the arcades all SNES, NES, Genesis and SMS games to play (Hence the Super Mario 3 picture)

Sweet. So how hard is the wiring? I ain't totally stupid regarding stuff like that just asking.
Because I've seen pics where the wiring was pretty chaotic and looked like it was a lot of work.

Wiring isn't that bad..basically every "switch" needs 2 wires..a positive..and a negative(ground). Each button has 1 switch, a 4-way joystick has 4 switches, 8 way joystick has 8 switches. All the grounds can be shared (meaning all the negative wires can connect together and then go to the negative "source"). All the positive ones will have their own positive wires. I used an IPAC (http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html) to make it easier..the computer "thinks" a keyboard is attached..when u wire the buttons to the IPAC, the ipac changes the "button" signal to a "keyboard stroke" that you map. It's not hard once you get the concept down.

Anywho, what did you do for speakers/monitor?

Do you have diagrams and shit I could copy?

Monitor was a 27" round-tube TV the first time and a 27" flat screen tv the 2nd time. 27" is an "easy" size TV to get ahold of..i think i paid around $150 or so for them. (You obviously don't need a HDTV or anything as the mame games have such poor resolutions.) Speakers I used computer speakers..mounted them inside the marquee and cut holes facing down (like regular arcades used to have..). I used plans a long time ago from this site. http://www.lusid.net/arcade/

ok so when you load up mame it has what looks like a complete list of games, are those the only games that are playable (if marked as working)? Cause theres quite a few awesome arcade games around that aren't in the list like all the house of deads etc.

Anyone building a cabinet in 2023?

I'm thinking of doing a really lazy build...

1) buy some cheap Pandora Box (2023 version), costs like 130-150 euro and you have the games + hardware you need - the joysticks and buttons for 2 players, controllerboard/computer.

2) rip the Pandora box apart, put it into a pre-built case (i found a maker in spain, looks pretty decent, probably going with the Metal Slug Neo Geo graphics).

3) Likely change parts to Sanwa (already have buttons laying around actually).

4) get a 24" screen. Already have one laying around, but i might get a more recent..

5) buy T-molding or paint to make the case look more professional.

6) insert speakers + sub (already have some old garbage laying around).

Of course the better option is to just build a PC inside the cabinet. It's just more costly and takes some time to set up. with the Pandora you have the menu and games etc already, though its hardware will be subpar to a decent PC of course.

Then there's the option of Raspberry Pi, but the more recent one is out of stock and it also takes time to research a ton of shit around that platform (never used it), nah, skip.

No, not really. Just unpack the retropie on a memory card and thats it. More or less anyway. If you want your games stored somewhere else, well - thats when you need to do some editing

Ah, so that's what retropie is, i've heard it mentioned.

Yeah, that could work and it would allow me more freedom in comparison to something like a Pandora Box (i don't think you can hack those so im going to be stuck with perhaps faulty emulation, though they seems to have been getting better over the years).

I think i would want the latest Rapberry Pie though, if i go down that route, and it seems hard to find :/

There's a used Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB on Tradera, costs almost twice as much as a new (when they can be found). for this price i can buy a pandora box which is both the software and all hardware including controllers..

Yeah Raspberry Pi is really trivial to use for someone like you, don't worry about it - I had built a little Mini-NES clone with Legos and a Pi3, was pretty proud of it and the kid I was gifting it to loved it Very Happy
You'll find a ton of resources for it and it's highly customizable, naturally.

EDIT : Holy fuck I didn't know the prices were so high due to the ongoing components shortage, 150-200€ for a Pi4 ?! Laughing Jeez, I guess you can subscribe to their affiliated resellers (https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b/) and play the patient game, but that Pandora Box idea seems great too ! Hope you can access its storage though - aka not a closed environment !

If you're finding guides and tutorials for turning a Pandora Box into an arcade cabinet, it probably means your project is viable Razz Since I'm finding a literal shitload of them with a simple search, you should be fine going ahead Very Happy

If you do, I hope you can share some pictures with us ! I'd love to do something like this but I'm a very poor handyman.. and no room for such a project either. Razz

yeah, i'll put up images eventually Smile

those pandora boxes with thousands of games, isn't it kind of funny how they can sell these openly on amazon etc? it's been going on for years too. some of those manufacturers are usually not afraid to sue, like Nintendo. I've even seen boxes with Nintendo and SEGA logos and art Laughing

Not sure they can be cracked, i saw some old post about jailbreaking them, so it seems like it's a closed system, like on an ipad.

edit: no.. won't be getting that arcade1up, after further reading, the software mod is not compatible with that version of the Arcade1up machine. cancelled the order..

Going well! still need to install T-molding, screen, controller board/electronics/joysticks and buttons and stickers for the left side.

Bought a nice 24" IPS gaming screen too and a (used) lower end PC, its just not worth getting Raspberry Pie 4 for the price of a decent enough (better than Raspberry Pie 4) used PC.

The front opens up so you can have a PC inside it.

looks great, where have you bought the "case"?

thinking of doing it too, but also not with a pi4. going for a cheap futro thin client which has much more power and costs the same (already bought one with celeron quad core as tiny home server for 40 euros. the ones with i3 costs less than euros)
