My Seagate HDD is already starting to show bad signs, some bad sectors popped up, which is strange considering it's been used only 1 year, if even that. Been downloading things quite a bit lately, but I don't think I pushed it that much. I don't really want to mess too much with it until I have one to backup some of the things on it. I want to get a new HDD anyway because I left the PC back in Romania with only a small SSD, so if I can fix the current one it'll go back in that one.

So the thing is, WD Black is a very obvious choice, but I was wondering if it actually is the best one for what I want. I already have a 1TB SSD for games. The HDD I'll be using for storing and downloading stuff. Would a WD Red be better for that? Do the Red ones even work properly as normal HDDs? What should I go for?

I have been using the same 2 WD Black 2tb for the past 4 years in raid 0 with no issues.

Changed motherboards put them back in and worked liked a charm and still does.

So from my experience the WD Black are the most reliable drives I have used up to now.

Worth the extra $$ imo Smile

Been reading around a bit more and it seems like it might be best to still go with a Black. The reason I was curious about a Red one instead is because I can find those quite a bit cheaper and I don't necessarily need the fastest HDD and they are just as reliable if not more than the Black ones.

I found a 2TB Black one that's been only repackaged on Amazon.it that's around €100. Seems the best thing to go for right now. I imagine it's perfectly fine if that's what they marked it as only.

Red's are also quite less noisy than black. Got two reds in the NAS, WD black in the waifu's PC and fucking hell that thing can roar at times while the reds are pretty silent even without a padded encasing.

If you don't need the speed, go red and save some cash and check for a deal. There should be a WD promotion once a month.

The worst experience I had were the 3TB green's. Had to RMA 2... 3rd one I didled around with to adjust the spin-up behaviour and since then no problems. Still wouldn't go green again though.

I don't know about the other colors but I don't really find the Black to be noisy or at least I don't hear it, having my headphones on half of the time and the constant background noise I have anyways, I can't really tell what does what at that point loll!!

All and all, performance/reliability, you can't go wrong.

Blue = green so watch out. I've had two greens die on me after a few years so I went black instead.

If they're just used for storage without extensive delete/writes every day you should be fine with most drives.

WD Blue 1TB failed me twice in a 5 year span. However, I was using them to torrent and download shit. Went back to Seagate and no problems so far!

@Frant You would think so, but the Seagate I have now is not considered a bad HDD as far as I know and yet... I'm having problems with it already.

Green I was never even considering. I used one for a time, which to be fair was already used, and it was very slow and seemed to struggle a lot. Just don't really see the point in them.

Blue I've had before and it lasted quite some time, managed to go through 2 PCs, but in the end it did go bust, pretty much completely. Don't really want one again, might as well try the other flavours, heh.

Red I could buy a 3TB one if I do. From what I understand with these for general PC use is that you'd have to disable some technology it has regarding accessing bad sectors and such. At the same time, even though my current HDD has 3TB, I don't really need this much. Which brings me to:

Black - here the only question right now is: if I buy one, do I buy the repackaged one from Amazon and risk it or do I pay about €20 more and get one from where I work, pick it myself from the boxes they come in?

I'm bad at taking decisions. Sad

Congrats on owning the worst manufacturer in existance right now..Seagate.
for storage, get a WD RED. I own three WD80EFAX drives.. all schucked and taken out of their case to use for my POS seagates that I don't trust anymore as backup..

ST3000DM01 would be the one bad drive I owned so far. Still lasted 3 years but then developed thousands of bad sectors all over.

https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/222267-seagate-faces-lawsuit-over-3tb-hard-drive-failure-rates

Hardware problem though, first triple platter 3 TB drive and they just weren't very durable.

Far as overall reliability goes Backblaze is good though over time they will replace the drives with newer and far higher capacity models though going through their quarterly reports are a good indication of which drives are good and which that develop a higher failure rate although by now the 3 and even 3 TB drives are slowly being phased out. Smile
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/2018-hard-drive-failure-rates/

Too many different factors too, newer drives are DENSE and that's a lot of data on each platter plus additional platter so similar to die shrinkage there's less fault tolerance and over time a HDD will be worn down even if it's not read/write data amount but simply how long it's been running.

From personal experience a well maintained drive should be able to last 6 to 8 years *before* it starts developing flaws (SMART is a good but not perfect indicator with utilities like Crystal Disk Info being able to read this though different drives will have different SMART stats and older drives might not have certain data that newer models have.)

Once it's developed bad sectors well there's thousands of sectors so even going from 512 bytes per sector to the current 4096 bytes a few bad sectors might not be the end of the drive but it entirely depends on if it's wear & tear or something like a impact which in turn could develop to far more damage or even total drive failure much quicker. Smile

Overall time is usually considered around 4 years or so but as I said in experience up to 8 is pretty common before it starts showing flaws though there's so many different factors and then we're also seeing newer tech like helium drives allowing for a different density from air and less friction and resistance if I'm recalling it right so over time helium drives might end up outlasting air drives though again there's more to it than just that.

Red's are a good though, depending on model some will be 5400 RPM instead of 7200 but for storage that's still good and it'll also be a bit quieter and run slightly less hot. Cache and such helps but since data is loaded into chunks and sent bit by bit most modern drives have enough cache though I think it's increased even further from 32 MB to 64, 128 and even 256 MB.

Power loss can be a factor too but since data is copied to cache before written out data loss should be less common and stability and problems like head crashes or similar should also be less of a factor, SSD's handle it well too from how I know but suffer quicker from a prolonged state of cold storage where data errors can develop within a year or so whereas a HDD can go for some few years before there's a risk of data damage.
