As far as I know the new series has no connection to the previous one, it's hard reboot.
Key changes to the series include that the middle sister is made a lesbian "strong-willed feminist" and "passionate, outspoken activist" and that The CW describes the show as "a fierce, funny, feminist reboot" that will see the sisters not only "[vanquish] supernatural demons" but also "[tear] down the patriarchy".
It debuts October 14, 2018.

- Oh, yes, the "as Piper" credit. I suppose that's why I mistakenly thought she became top billed name from season 4 and on, because I remembered her having significance in the credits. But, no, it was just the "as Piper" bit. Nevertheless, it should mean she was getting paid extra.
