Double Damage Games has announced Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, a “blue-collar space combat adventure” game and “sort-of-prequel” to 2015’s Rebel Galaxy. It will launch for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC in Q1 2019.
Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a blue-collar space combat adventure packed with outlaws, explosions, gleefully unrealistic spaceflight, and a hell of a soundtrack. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a sort-of-prequel to 2015’s Rebel Galaxy, this time dropping you right into the cockpit and doubling down on the roadhouse vibe of the previous game. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw features high-octane space combat, over 20 hours of subspace radio, side activities like billiards and dice poker, plenty of sketchy characters to meet, and sketchier jobs to take on. Nobody’s saving the universe around here – they’d settle for saving a couple of credits. It’s aiming to launch Q1 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
“This has got to be the most ambitious game I’ve ever worked on,” said Travis Baldree, co-founder of Double Damage Games. “We took what worked from the last title, and then went a little crazy. It’s got a stronger focus on story and place, a huge jump in detail, and while it still works great for folks with a HOTAS at home, I think we’ve managed to make space combat accessible and fun for everybody else in a way that nobody has managed before. We’ve got a lot more to share in the months ahead”
Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a prequel to 2015’s Rebel Galaxy, set 34 years prior in a series of star systems closer to old Earth. You’ll inhabit the role of Juno Markev, an outlaw and smuggler who went straight and settled down until events conspired to drag her back into the life. After an encounter in a shady watering hole goes bad, your ship is trashed, and you find yourself in debt to an old friend and casino owner who gives you a rustbucket and some words of advice. Packed with exciting combat, unique ships, and over twenty hours of great music, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw drops you into a retro future steeped in blue-collar Americana.
I really like the sound of this, Rebel Galaxy was fine for what it was but the semi-2D structure designed for capital ships and grind-y structure didn't quite rub my space itches the right way. Flying a starship instead with 6 degrees of freedom, having more emphasis on story and a cockpit view sounds definitely better, let's hope they can pull it off. We still need a proper sequel to Freelancer, damn it
Hrm, that's surprising. I haven't been following Double Damage closely, but from what I had heard they had said they weren't interested in making any expansions or sequels to Rebel Galaxy. I enjoyed the original game, but like Ixi I found it a little lacking. Although I wasn't actually that fazed by the broadside combat, it was more that it ended up being pretty samey regardless of which solar system you went to or which ship you used. I'd be more interested in any sequel (or prequel, as it may be) focusing on fixing up that element. I hope they don't blow all their manpower and resources on simply making it full 3D flight.
All that said, nice piss-take of Star Citizen and $1,000 JPG ships, lol.

With the footage from that new video, this game looks like it will be great. I especially like the Ship Paint tools and allowing people to 3D Print them is a nice touch as they do that in Star Trek Online as well. Hopefully they allow some modding just to add a little something extra from the creative modders out there.
The 1hr video is up on Youtube, so you don't need to watch it via IGN.
That dev sounds like he could have a career in voice-over work if he ever gets sick of game development.
The ship painter is pretty hilarious. It's not just "like" Photoshop, half the UI looks like it was lifted from PS completely. I wonder if that may change before release, lest Adobe have a few unkind words about it. A very interesting feature though. And if they are going as far as letting you export UV templates and importing custom textures, I wonder if they will allow for custom ship models this time.
Stuff like dice poker and pool seems like a bizarre waste of resources in a space game primarily made by two guys. Maybe the original Rebel Galaxy was way more successful than I thought and they have money to burn.
So, we're playing as a woman? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......
my same thought... why a woman?
Agreed.
+1
I'll still buy it if its good.
Just wish we had the choice of being male or female (or human or alien).
Good space games are hard to come by.
Will support with my wallet if it deserves it. Like what all i see in that video.

It's great that they've upgraded to first person full range dog-fighting, however the gameplay loop itself seems to be entirely unchanged (which is a bit of a bad thing as the original loop was VERY simplistic). He did mention at one point that you'll have the ability to buy and upgrade an entire station as well as a mining outpost, so that's something to look forward to at least, though, again, not sure how deep that'll go. I'm still disappointed that, even upon expanding their flight model, they opted for the automatic docking bullshit. Would have been so much cooler to manually fly in and whatnot.
Aside from that, definitely a few steps in the right direction. Lookin' forward to it.

Was just playing the first one... How I miss this? I mean it's nothing extraordinary and the gameplay and controls are simple...it's not a space sim, more arcade but still fun.
Also it's obvious and confirmed, at least in my point of view, that my initial hunch was right and that these guys are heavily influenced by Privateer series.. Even the planets have the same names (hades, hephasteus etc). Finally a good PROPER old school space sim... Can't wait
When he was talking about the "I Win" button on the controller (basically you push it and it keeps the enemy on your screen, doing all the flying for you so you don't have to do anything apart from aiming) that people with a HOTAS setup can just ignore it and use their gear as normal - so probably supported at least to some extent.
That said, the original didn't play very well with a M+K. It could be done, sure, but it was very evident from the UI/mappings/ship interaction wheel that it was built to play with controller in mind. Hopefully this one's different though as you actually get to fly your ship instead of being stuck on a 2D plane.

Oh, I would play smth good in space....
How was previous part with m+kb?
Not perfect but definitely playable. As Immunity said, the two-dimensional flying and combat relying upon left/right broadsides were mostly designed around the gamepad, though m&kb implementation was acceptable overall (I didn't have any particular issues with it) with also the benefits from having better control over the view as per usual.
