THE TEMPERATURE IS DROPPING "An alien civilization we can compare star charts with? That's our holy grail. We never expected we'd actually find it." - Unknown Alterra Employee
Unknown Worlds is building a stand-alone expansion to Subnautica, called Subnautica Below Zero. Set in an ice-bound region of planet 4546B, after the events of the original game, Below Zero will offer a new chapter in the Subnautica universe. We would like to show you some of Below Zero's concepts, and share our plans for release.
In the coming months, we will release an unfinished, early version of Below Zero in Early Access. We will then begin releasing consistent content updates, carefully crafting the game based on your feedback - Just like the original Subnautica.
The concept of Below Zero is still developing. We are keeping the core gameplay mechanics, such as base building and open-ended exploration. We are also exploring new ones, such as thermal management, and more voiced dialogue at the core of the plot. We're still in early stages and nothing is set in ice. These features may change prior to, and during, Early Access.
“The Vesper is a semi-permanent orbital installation, designed to provide a sustainable environment for research personnel stationed far from Federation space”
I loved Subnautica far more than I expected to - mainly because of how it played with scale. (the massive creatures really give you a "wow" moment) I hope this can live up to the original.
Public Service announcement regarding @Subnautica Below Zero: it is a stand-alone “new chapter”, to be released (not free) on Steam and the Epic store in the beginning of February. PC first, consoles later (EA tough there).
Please please give us at least something that can deter Leviathans, like electrified hull, shock bombs etc. (fine, make those rare so the fear factor isn't removed, just give us something else than that little survival knife).
Please also add something so epic that it makes the Leviathan seem like those scrap-collecting sea-dogs, something that will make us soil our pants when something absolutely gargantuan is coming out from the abyss.

Stasis Rifle works good enough. Even tho once you get the Exo Suit you can easily escape from Leviathans.
And they probably will add something scarier. Maybe not so big but faster and deadlier.
I have no idea, only saw videos of people killing a Reaper with torpedoes. Dunno how long it took them. Personally I never bothered to fight them. They are supposed to be avoided and admired from a distance anyways.
I wouldn't mind some even bigger monsters myself too, tho. Hell, even docile ones, like the reefbacks with some amazing sound design would be great. They could make one of the islands an A'Tuin-like giant turtle with a full eco-system on its back.
Exactly. The reefbacks I mentioned already have stuff to harvest on their shells, and the Cyclops showed that the game can handle the player walking around in an already moving object, so it should be doable.
Although I have a feeling the devs are fully aware of this kind of possibility. Hell, one of the islands in vanilla was already held up by gigantic floaters. Maybe we'll get a fully mobile island in the next expandalone. Or in this one and they just don't want to spoil it.
I never did any advanced stuff in my first play-through. I created a main base near my pod and then I created another base at the entrance to the river (whatever it was called) but I never used that, I was too busy exploring. I've started playing it again but the grind of finding resources in order to upgrade your tech is kind of a nuisance. I've got a Seamoth for now but I've got a lot of grinding and scanning to do in order to build my base as well as the sub and the Prawn Suit.
Second play-through is definitely not as fun as when I played it the first time since it's all about exploring the unknown. Not nothing is unknown. I remember walking to the edge of the crater and falling 3000m with Ghost Leviathans following me until the pressure destroyed the prawn suit.
I hope they expand the base building and introduce more scientific modules and other things.
I still love the experience I had when I played it through the first time (it's GOTY+ for me).
ps. I didn't even know you could build scanner stations that scanned for Leviathans.

It scans for a ton of stuff. Resources, wildlife, wrecks, etc. Very handy, but needs some range modules to be super useful. Not having to look for stalker teeth for hours is a huge relief.
Mmm no VR planned for the game.. not a great decision seeing as VR is ridiculously epic in the original (once you fix the PDA etc with mods)
They say it's just to make the game great, but I suspect it's so it can be launched on console and maintain parity across the board - not wonderful IMO.
I'm also wondering if they're going to make it more.. shooty shooty this time thus ruining the whole point. I'm definitely not as hyped for this as I once was...
