Most patches are for security patching. Hehehe There are 2 patches one to 1.5 another to 1.51, future games will update your PSP and future games wont play if you dont have the newest patch (or newer) when that game was released.
Check out psphacks.net and sonypspworld.com

It's quite simple really...

If you update it then you can't run homebrew stuff... Like GB Emulator, Tetris etc Very Happy

there may be an upside to all this patching.

The patches supposedly run from memory card...

if something run from memory card can modify the bios config, how hard would it be to pack some code into there that would launch a file browser, or just hack the update to bypass the sec. settings?

as for in-game bios checks... even if it is true, the most the check will do is read a number... they wouldn't waste that much of our time, otherwise they'd get bitching...

so if I update it, is there a way of restoring/going back to the old version?

a button or something to reset the system?

the thing is for the psp to run something off the memory card the file has to be digitally signed..
