In the highly-anticipated return of two iconic characters, the arch-rivals from the legendary Karate Kid film series reunite over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Now living in the affluent hills of Encino, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) leads an enviable life with his beautiful family, while running a successful string of car dealerships throughout the valley. Meanwhile, his high school adversary, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), whose life has taken a rocky turn, seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo. Their lives inevitably become intertwined and the rivalry is reignited, setting forth the next generation of “karate kids” in COBRA KAI, a YouTube Red Original Series.
COBRA KAI is produced by Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television.

If this was a Netflix or Amazon original, I'd have some faith but .... yeeaaaah no.
The original movies (the first two anyway) were perfectly executed "underdog revenge" movies where an unlikely protagonist ends up beating the "top dogs" - the 80's had quite a few such movies but Karate Kid was probably my favorite but I don't think they can repeat it with two grown-ups because such things just work better with teenagers.
It's amazing to think how much of an impact it had on kids at the time. In cafes that had arcade cabinets, karate games thrived, half my class took up karate and we were all pretending to be ninjas and so on.
This looks retarded.
This looks like the retards at YouTube really liked how I met your mother later seasons and thought that it was legit lolz.
There's no need for this.
There's never been a need for this.
But when how I met your mother made it a joke that this loser was really the hero...
And new found fame of this no name actor.
A need for this was found?! Lol
Making him the underdog means he never recovered from that fight, means that the last 20'odd years this popular bully in school never achieved anything in life by being #2 at a karate tournament.
Kenny powers worked because he was an asshole, had everything, lost everything and still held onto his fame when there wasn't none. Here you have a loser holding onto his loser shit for 20 odd years...

It's a double edged sword. On the one side, you got to respect the original movies: he was someone everyone loved to hate as a kid since he was a bully, arrogant, and good at something. When you make a series like this, you basically harm the original movies because once you feel he's the underdog in this series, watching the movies will make you go "aww now his life will be all screwed up" instead of the elation of his defeat. On top of that, for new viewers, this won't appeal. For old viewers, it may impact their memory of the original movies.
Watching the two first movies again, I often wonder where the movie industry went wrong because these classic 80's movies all feel so magical in a sense (same with Goonies, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Gremlins, Terminator, Robocop, Ghostbusters, ET, Top Gun, Ferris Bueler's Day Off, Blade Runner, etc. etc. etc.). Modern movies tend to miss that spark that makes them great. It's why I find most new movies forgettable - industrial.
the 80ies was amazing movie scene, but i think this is a very creative and funny idea, and would love to see more of this kind of stuff. as someone who watched this movie as a kid, i love this kind of flashback comic approach

Well, maybe we are only going to see a loser for 20 odd years because he was and is a fucking asshole? Maybe it's that transformation that we will see? Maybe they will try to show how he might redeem himself? You are just assuming that him losing THAT fight made him the loser he is today. Maybe it's just a small piece of the puzzle.
Binge watching this now via the Youtube Red trial (just signed up and cancelled so that I don't get billed).
It's a fantastic homage to the original, and nowhere near as cringe-worthy and cheap as I thought it was going to be. They did a lot of fan service in terms of music and locations as well. Some of its strongest scenes are direct throwbacks to the first film.
On Episode 9 so far, love it!

Making that sweet sweet cancelled subscription money over at youtube red shame though, as I'm also not going to add one more streaming platform subscription. Prime and Netflix are OK, what does red even offer? Free access to some of it's playstorw movies? I doubt it...

Yea, they offer jack shit compared to the competition. Not sure why anyone would subscribe to YT Red when there's so much better on offer. Having said that, I might sub next year for a month if this gets renewed. Really enjoyed it!

And here i thought YT Red was just some glorified sub to remove ads for people that don't know what an adblocker is.

are the two main guys actually the same guys as them kids from 1984 ?
Yep. Same actors playing the same characters, 34 years later. There are also two neat cameos by other original actors as well.
