I want to migrate all the stuff from my old 1 and 2TB drives (also need more space for HD porn Laughing ) before they fail and haven't really watched the HDD market for years. Already got an SSD for gaming, so I'm looking more for reliability than performance.

First off - is there any point in getting an SSHD?

As for brands:
Seagate: I've sort of ruled out Seagate because of their failure rate, which seems to be linked to their 3TB models and supposedly the 4TB fare better

WD:
black - good performance and warranty, but the noise is a bit worrysome
red (pro) - current favorite since they're supposed to be more reliable, the other question is how sensible it is to stick a NAS drive into a desktop

Hitachi (or rather what's left of them) and Toshiba: don't have a clue there, but i would be happy for any recommendations!

SSHDs are mostly just marketing bullshit and you won't really notice a performance increase.

As for HDDs: Try the Toshiba N300. I had it myself. Though while it performed rather good, and might live a relative long, the work-noise could be a bit annoying for you. At least it was for me.

HGST all the way. I've got drives from 2005 that are still going strong.

What you mens think? Good deal, bad deal, njeh deal? This one will almost certainly be cheaper coming black friday but I can get one right now here for that price but without paying postage costs.

They are said to be very reliable.
But on the other side they are also said to be relatively loud. So not really suited for a desktop PC.

i did far too much research on this back then and the end result was that all manufacturers except HGST are shit. ended up slapping 2x4TB toshiba x300 into a raid1 and while they are a bit loud, i kind of like the retro hdd rumbling noise and performance is top notch.

I own 4 of those 4TB WD Reds, have 3 of them in a ZFS FreeNAS cluster, been chugging along for ~2 years now. The 4th one has been in my desktop for maybe 3 or 4 years and is just fine.

But considering reliability, I really can't remember the last time I had to switch a HDD because it broke on me. Maybe 8+ years ago? Back then it happened to me several times. The past few replacements have all been either moves to SSDs or simple replacements because sub-1TB HDDs just don't make sense anymore in 3.5" sizes.

So has reliability really gone up or have I just been lucky?

I seldom remember having bad sectors on HDDs, for over 20 years.

Maybe 3 times? 1 of which was a friend's HDD..

it's actually a funny story, I was called to install something, maybe reinstall her windows, and while rebooting I noticed her S.M.A.R.T. was disabled, so I booted again, went into BIOS and enabled it, she asked what it was, I began to explain that it checked several HDD vital signs and called a warning if something was wrong, and at that exact moment the POST screen stopped with a S.M.A.R.T. warning message Laughing

till about 5 years ago all my drives were SEAGATE barracudas, but now I only use WD Black.

Some models get a bit of a reputation for quick failure rates, usually they're pretty reliable and robust though but hardware errors can be pretty random so just keep a check on SMART status and it should be fine as long as you notice irregularities in time. Smile

I have 7 drives in my PC - two SSDs, 4 WD drives (2 green for media files like Plex movies, music, photographs, one black for Torrent drive and work files, one red for retro gaming drive) and one Seagate.

The oldest drives (2TB ones) still work great, no errors at all but the second most recent drive (not counting the SSDs) has several bad sectors. It's a 3TB green drive that's used for Plex movies and TV series. I also put less important stuff on there but while moving that stuff to another drive, Explorer kept hanging until I did a drive scan and saw several bad sectors.

Considering my other green WD was bought at the same time and has zero issues, it really seems random which drive will have bad sectors and which won't. I learned years ago to make backups of my most important files and to spread them around my drives so I never lose that much at once.

this begs an interesting question:

I have 3 obsolete HDDs, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB.

Is there a device I can attach them all to for storage purposes, outside my desktop case?
And how is it connected to my PC, lan or SATA3?

Why not plug them to your PC and use windows 10 storage spaces to make them one single "big" 3.5tb drive.

I bought the Intel Optane memory 32gb accelerator. Boy this thing is fantastic, paired it with a low speed 5200rpm HDD and now that drive whizzes by, games load faster, programs open quicker, seems all HDD activity is boosted tremendously. They are pretty cheap too, with the 16gb version retailing at less then the price of a triple A game at <£30 and the slightly faster 32gb version at just over 50 quid. They can also be used as storage media in themselves but thats kinda missing the point of these things and what can you realistically do with 32gb anyway??? Confused
It brings all those slow HDD's bang up to date.
