Want to find a replacement for RTCW - are there any?

So I've been taking a break from online shooters for some time now and focused on single player games. The last online FPS´s that I played a LOT was RTCW (return to castle wolfenstein) and BF2.

My best gaming moments was without a doubt with RTCW because of the great team play and the fact it was objective based as opposed to CTF. BF2 was not bad either and I really liked it because of the squad play where it was important to keep in a group.
There simple has not been anything close to RTCW afterwards in sheer "fun-ness" even though I've tried pretty much every game in the Battlefield series after BF2. The COD series has not really been for me since it is more a lone wolf kind of game.

So are there any good recent online FPS that has quite a lot of players and focuses on getting a good team play on? I would love to feel the same rewarding feeling as RTCW after blowing up the communications tower, sinking the sub or protecting the objective for a whole round. The classes were also so well balanced IMO.

Cheers!

Wink

Thanks, I tried TF2 when it was released but I felt it was rather goofy and I didn´t feel that the aim was very responsive, felt like a console shooter. But I might have been mistaken and sohuld give it another shot?

Is the team play good?

RTCW was the first MP shooter I have played, so I have some great memories from that as well.
The first game that came to mind as a replacement was Quake World, but I don't think anyone plays it much anymore. So the first choice for me would be Bad Company 2 - it has the best team/squad play right now, as far as I am concerned, with plenty of (destructive) fun, especially if you get good teams (Haven't played TF2 though). But you did mention that you have tried all the BF games, so this one is off the list as well, I guess Smile

Another objective based game I find myself enjoying quite a lot is Medal Of Honor's Combat Mission mode. It lacks class based teamwork though (medics, engineers etc). Also, many people here seem to dislike the game for some reason Smile

All in all, I don't think I have played games that managed to get the gameplay just right like RTCW did. May be it's just how I rememeber it, but it seemed like a perfect game.

Tried Quake Wars when it came out, but i think I was too blind from RTCW too really give it a fair chance. At that time I did not like the game mechanics and shooting. It just felt so "light". Don´t know how I can better explain that. Not really understanding WTF was going on didnt help either I think so it was back to RTCW. Smile
Do people still play it?

Garus I agree. There are objectives to be performed and I actually have the game and kinda liked it. I might be going out on a limb when I say this - but were people in general better at working as a team back in the days even when just pubbing? Not sure about that statement, maybe I was just lucky with the servers I played on. Just remember players sacrificing themselfs for the team and didn't care as much about K/D ratio and stats in general. People classing up to actually play as a group rather than play for myself. It was the current round that was important, nothing else. Now it seems people don´t care about objectives or win, just one man rambo style to get the best K/D ratio.

I might have rose tinted glasses on which is very common when you become nostalgic.

Red Orchestra looks interesting. Focus seems to be more on realism that should make it more important to play as team?

I liked ET:Quake Wars, it could be actually a decent recommendation Razz

You might wanna try Bad Company 2, even if it's overall a worse and more streamlined version of BF2. Still a very good experience in my opinion.

Unfortunately there aren't many FPS focused on team play/objectives Neutral

i dont think there are ANY focused on team play. seriously... good luck getting anyone in tf2 to play as a team... i concider some bored pyro randomly spy checking as a team play GOLD mine... and if an engineer actually builds a sentry for defence or a pyro actually lights my arrow... ON PURPOSE... then holy shit, ive slipped into some kind of parallel universe where people arent douchebags.

Eh, when I said Quake World, I meant Quake Wars... stupid brain.

As for playing as a team... it is somewhat rare indeed, but games like BC2 manage to create an illusion of teamplay quite often, thanks to it's design (illusion, because teamwork happens unintentionally Smile). And also getting a good team and a squad is not impossible, especially if you find a decent server with regular players that has a decent community forming around it. I manage to stumble into some really good games more often than not.

In retrospect, I think that RTCW worked great for me because of the servers I was playing on, where there were always good teamwork minded people online (perhaps there were more players like that in general at that time). And also because action was more focused - there really wasn't much point staying away from the objectives, since if you wanted to score you would be in the thick of it. There was no DM modes, so objectives was the whole point for everyone. Unlike CoD, for example, where everyone have their killstreaks, KD ratios and unlocks to worry about.

bc2 is just one big cluster fuck, 2 sides bashing on each other wave after wave, too many people on too little space ...

Seriously, there is no teamplay at all, just 2 sides running at each other until one wins.

Razorsedge - which of those games is the better team play experience you think? And least prone too have cheaters?

Brink looks pretty cool, wonder how the multi is going to be...

I will definitely get ripped a new one if I play any of the quake games so I think that is out of the question.

Brink is made by the same guys who did the enemy territories, so I am waiting for this one myself. The first gameplay videos looked good, the more recent ones seemed a bit bland though, so I am not sure what to expect.

On second thought, why not try America's Army 3? I saw a gameplay vid and there were lots of teamplay moments (revive downed people, people shouting hints where the enemies are, etc).

People still play ET:QW? Played the demo.. Felt quite good..
Would consider buying it (must be cheap now), if the community is still active?

Don't think it is still active much. Xfire stats show pretty low numbers. Haven't got it installed to check the real situation. The original ET is still relatively active though.

Both RO and DoD are great if you have good team and playing on good server (with mature players). RO has much bigger maps and you can drive vehicles also. DoD has few maps with objective such as to plant a bomb on tank, half-track, AA gun etc.

If you want more realism go for RO, otherwise go for DoD.

RO/Arma ? my mind boggles.. RO is a fps its based on using fps maps and models, if your going to be sure that arma is a more advanced version of RO then you would have to say Arma is just that against all fps style games.

Id say its a bad comparison really..
