*Total Annihilation Spring Project*

  • Official web page: Here
  • Publisher: Clan Sy
  • [b]Developer: Cavedog
  • [b]Genre: RTS
  • Release date: 2005-04-26
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

It is 4000 years in the future, and the epic battle between the Arm and the Core has devastated the galaxy. Both sides fight on with super-advanced technology, from plasma guns to giant robots to sonar jammers. The only acceptable outcome is total victory.

You, as the Commander of either Arm or Core, must build up your base to destroy the other side, just like every other strategy game. Mission objectives range from taking out specific targets to rescuing hostages to capturing the enemy base and using it in the next mission.

Unlike other strategy games, however, you start out with the Commander, the game's most powerful unit, and must defend him at all costs. Resource collection is very quick and easy, since a single unit can extract metal indefinitely from a mine without ever having to return to your base, while options for producing energy include solar power, wind power, hydroelectric power, geothermal power, and fusion power.

  • Multiplayer: YES
  • Media type and size: Zipped, *01*x*66mb*
  • System requirements:
    Quote:

You will most certainly need a 3D graphics card to run TA Spring, which will probably require at least a GeForce3 (note that a GeForce4 MX is not better than a GeForce3). Minimum CPU requirements are a little more complex. A more powerful CPU will have the capability to support larger maps and a greater maximum unit limit. A 1ghz CPU should be able to support an estimated 500 units. The needed memory will also vary with unit count and mapsize, but 512mb should be enough.

  • Screenshots: Here
  • Trailer: Trailer

Finally Total Annihilation gets a graphical refreshment Smile , core gameplay remains the same.

This was my favourite game of all time - must have played it for a solid year at least Very Happy . The expansion pack Core Contingency was ok but TAK was a bit of a disaster as Chris Taylor had left Cavedog by then. My only worry with this version is its not commercial, so its release may drag on and on. Their doesn't appear to be any ambient music - the original TA musical score was superb and really increased the game's attraction. I think it was composed by an orchestra. The guys doing this converison worringly describe themselves as programmers only Exclamation - so they could well miss the mark that made the original game truly great. It isn't enough to be a good coder only, you have to have that X-Factor that few people like Chris Taylor have Surprised .

Also what happens when Atari or Phantagram, who I think are doing the licensed sequel to TA, find out about this game? Lawsuits anyone? The guys who tried to do a remake of System Shock were slapped down by EA recently Sad .
I'll hold out for Chris Taylor's future opus "Supreme Commander" which might come in 2006 - this will be the true successor to his awesome Total Annhilation.

No lawsuits, this is just an engine you need original TA data to use it for anything. Very Happy

I gave it a try. Well, it still has unfinished look to it, and the interface is utter crap. The gfx is much better then original TA, but no state of the art. Apart from that, there is no single player, only multi. The game lobby is pretty empty, and finding a good game may take some time.

Maybe, with good GUI this game may look better. Good try tough.

Personally, I love TA enough to overlook any interface issues -- this is obviously an early version. But I am real impressed with some of the less apparant features -- you can 'take control' of your units, walk them around, fly them, etc. Its just cool. Also the explosions and particle physics impressed me alot.

Im really excited about this -- hopefully it will continue to be developed and improved for some time on.
